In 1922, the young Zhu Yaohua met with Sun Yat-sen, and after the conversation, Dr. Sun Yat-sen was very fond of this military general, and Sun Yat-sen was very important to him, and appointed him as the commander-in-chief of the Northern Expedition Xiang Army and the governor of Hunan Province. After the outbreak of the All-Out War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the 18th Division led by Zhu Yaohua was incorporated into the 10th Army. In September, in order to rush to the aid of Shanghai, the 18th Division was assigned to the 9th Army of the Third Theater of Operations, and then rushed to the Songhu Battlefield. In this way, division commander Zhu Yaohua led his troops to the front line of the Songhu War.

After entering Shanghai, the 18th Division was deployed in the area from Longhua to Beixinjing for deployment. At the beginning of October, the Japanese army had occupied Baoshan, Liu Xing, Luodian, Wusong and other places, and was concentrating its forces in an attempt to capture Dachang and achieve a breakthrough in the middle road, thus occupying the whole of Shanghai. The 18th Division was also transferred to the area west of Oba to deploy to prevent the Japanese from breaking through Oba. On October 12, the Japanese army attacked Chen Xing, and a bloody battle broke out. In this battle, the Chinese invested 100,000 troops and took turns to prevent the Japanese from occupying Dachang. Faced with the stubborn resistance of the Chinese defenders, the Japanese failed to break through from the front. As a result, the Japanese changed the offensive side, they concentrated their superior forces to attack Nanxiang, and then surrounded the field from the flanks. On the 17th, the Hu family house and the Luohe Bridge west of Dachang were lost one after another. On the 25th, the Japanese army dispatched more than a hundred aircraft to indiscriminately bomb the positions of the 18th Division guarding Dachang, and the 18th Division, in the case of a shortage of weapons and inferior firepower to the Japanese army, held its position, suffered heavy losses, and the fortifications of the position were destroyed by Japanese aircraft.

In the face of the frenzied attack of the Japanese army, Zhu Yaohua requested a retreat to preserve his strength. However, Chiang Kai-shek, who was also the commander of the Third Theater, gave the troops a death order, and he ordered: "The officers and men garrisoned in Jiangwan and Dachang shall not retreat without orders, and those who violate the military law shall be punished." ”

Therefore, the officers and men of the 18th Division had to use the craters blown out by the shells dropped by the Japanese aircraft as cover, while stopping the Japanese attack and waiting for rescue.

Reinforcements were delayed, but the Japanese had already reached the position of the 18th Division. Under the impact of the Japanese army, the officers and men of the 18th Division were completely lost. In the face of the crazy attack of the Japanese army, Zhu Yaohua organized a death squad to fight desperately against the Japanese army. However, due to the disparity in strength, the soldiers of the 18th Division began to retreat.
