"If the youth is strong, China is strong, and if the sports are strong, China is strong." Youth sports is the cornerstone of the future and development of China's sports industry, and youth golf has always been the focus of special attention of the Chinese Golf Association," said Li Jinliang, director of the Competition Department of the Chinese Golf Association. In the past 16 years, Volvo Youth Competition has produced a batch of outstanding athletes such as Li Haotong, Dou Zecheng, Jin Cheng, Liu Yu, Zhang Weiwei and so on. When they were teenagers, these players were able to access world-class professional events and star players through Volvo's event platform, broadening their horizons, improving their level, and seeing the goal of struggle. In recent years, Volvo Cars' investment in youth events has continued to increase, and after consultation with the China Higher Education Association, it was decided to increase the Volvo National Youth Challenge from 1 to 4 next year. I believe that Volvo's efforts will provide more, better and higher quality competition stages for the majority of young players in our country to show themselves. ”

Volvo's first involvement in Chinese youth competitions began in 2005, introducing a rare hole format in domestic youth competitions at that time, hosting the Volvo National Junior Hole Competition, and adding the Volvo National Junior Challenge from 2019.

Zhao Qin

Ms. Zhao Qin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Volvo China Open and Vice President of Corporate & Marketing Communications for Volvo Cars Asia Pacific, explains why Volvo Cars is investing more in youth competitions: "In order to allow more young players to participate in Volvo Youth Events, the Volvo National Junior Challenge came into being in 2019, and the creation of the Challenge has enriched our qualification channels for the Competition and given us the opportunity to meet more talented young players. In line with its commitment to the China Golf Association, Volvo plans to further expand the Volvo Junior Tournament system in 2022, increasing the original Volvo National Junior Challenge to four, so that more young players who like golf and have talent have the opportunity to participate in the event. ”

Explaining the reasons for the increase in the number of Volvo National Junior Challenges, Ms. Zhao Qin specifically mentioned Zhou Yanhan, the youngest 13-year-old of this year's Volvo China Open. In 2019, 11-year-old Zhou Yanhan participated in the Volvo National Pit Competition, began the footsteps of the Dream National Open, and successfully qualified for the Volvo National Junior Hole Championship that year, becoming the youngest player in history to compete for a place at the Volvo China Open. This year, he continued to compete in the challenge, all the way through the level, played five rounds, and advanced to the final of the Volvo National Junior Hole Championship and won the runner-up. His fighting spirit explains the original intention of the Volvo China Open to open the Youth Challenge, that is, to let more outstanding young players participate in the National Open. In the future, the Volvo China Open will also give more opportunities for young players like Zhou Yanhan.

Zhou Yanhan

Although Zhou Yanhan did not perform well in the first round, he believes that he has gained a lot. "I learned a lot from the two senior professional players (Wu Hongfu and Zhou Guowu) in the same group," Zhou Yanhan said, "my biggest feeling is that the first tee ball can't be too tight, because a tight one will definitely not achieve the expected effect." In addition, my father also guided me on the side, telling me a lot of rules and etiquette, including not to get too close to him when pushing the ball in the same group, and not to stand behind him when others pushed... It was sure to be a rewarding day. It is worth mentioning that Zhou Yanhan's father is a first-generation professional player in China, and he served as his caddy in this game.

According to tradition, the men's champion of the Volvo National Junior Hole Championship will go straight to the Volvo China Open, and the Open Organizing Committee will involve volvo Junior Players in more areas in the future, in addition to watching the game, children will be invited to experience the open jobs, including open ambassadors, official starters, special press officers and so on.

"I believe that media friends have seen that Ji Yuai, the runner-up of the 2021 Volvo National Junior Hole Championship, also participated in the event this week as a starter," Zhao Qin said, "In fact, in the process of preparing for the Volvo China Open, we have been considering whether teenagers can understand and participate in the Open from a non-competition perspective." Ji Yu'ai is not the first time we have done this. As early as 2016 and 2017, Chen Peicheng became a scorekeeper of the Open for two consecutive years and has participated in our Open. We believe that in this way, young players can better understand our game, the efforts behind it, and cherish the opportunity to participate, which is also a good preparation for their future participation. ”
