Motional has partnered with Uber to provide self-driving food delivery services in the United States

According to foreign media reports, Modern Motor Company and Aptiv's self-driving joint venture Motional announced a partnership with Uber Technology Company (Uber) to launch self-driving vehicle delivery services for Uber customers from early 2022 in Santa Monica, USA. Motional's all-electric car will deliver a set menu at select restaurants on Uber's food delivery app Eats. This partnership is a major breakthrough for both companies. Motional expanded into driverless delivery for the first time, and Uber established a road distribution partnership with a self-driving car (AV) supplier for the first time.

Motional will use its next-generation self-driving car, a pure electric self-driving taxi based on the hyundai IONIQ 5, and make in-vehicle modifications to enable automated delivery. This will be the first time Motional's SAE L4 vehicle has been used in a distribution application, marking an evolution towards the company's dual-purpose product strategy.

Karl Iagnemma, President and CEO of Motional, said: "Motional has successfully entered the automated delivery market. We are proud that our first distribution partner was Uber and want to provide efficient and convenient delivery services to our customers in California through our driverless technology." It is believed that this cooperation will be very successful, and there will be more opportunities to deploy Motional technology on the Uber platform. ”

Sarfraz Maredia, vice president and head of Uber Eats and head of the U.S. and Canada, said, "We are excited to partner with Motional to pioneer new delivery methods for Uber Eats consumers in 2022. Our consumer and merchant partners are looking forward to this collaboration to further improve convenience, reliability and innovation. ”
