In the previous article, the author recounted the walk to Deng Tingzhen Cultural Park to visit the tomb of the anti-British national hero Deng Tingzhen, and coincidentally, there was also the tomb of Deng Yanda, who was also surnamed Deng and also a famous historical figure in modern times, in Nanjing, located in the Linggu Temple Park at the southern foot of Nanjing's Purple Mountain.

Starting from Maqun Subway Station, head west along Zhongshanmen Avenue, turn right through the bridge hole under the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway Nanjing Link, and you can see an open water surface, which is the Wukesong Reservoir on the southeast corner of Zijin Mountain.

Heading west along the reservoir, there is a green trail at the foot of the mountain that leads you on foot to the south gate of Linggu temple park.

Linggusi Park is a place that I am more familiar with, thirty years ago I used to live in the nearest residential area here, when the park was not closed to collect tickets, so every weekend or weekday evening, often walk unconsciously to the park. Now, thirty years later, revisiting the old place is both intimate and a little strange. But overall, the sights around Linggu Temple haven't changed much, and I can't help but evoke a lot of memories.

One of the most memorable attractions is the Wuliang Hall, which was built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty and is the oldest and largest brick arch structure hall, which is the immeasurable hall dedicated to the Immeasurable Buddha in linggu temple. The whole building does not have wooden beams, with a brick arch structure as a beam and then support the arched dome, speculating on its meaning, I am afraid that it is cleverly using the harmonic sound "no beam" to metaphorically "immeasurable", so it is also commonly known as the beamless hall.

In 1931, the then government of the Republic of China converted the Wuliang Hall into the memorial hall of the National Revolutionary Army Memorial Cemetery, and renamed it "Zhengqi Hall".

Another impressive is the Linggu Pagoda, which is 66 meters high, has eight sides and nine floors, has a beautiful shape, elegant and solemn, and has a distinct national style, which is a memorial tower built in 1931 to commemorate the fallen soldiers, and is an important organizational part of the cemetery complex in linggu temple park. When he was young, he climbed to the top of the tower and was still breathless, but this time he could not help but be afraid to swim again.

Deng Yanda's tomb is located in the far east of the park, passing through the Linggu Ancient Temple and the "Linggu Deep Pine" stone stele, and slowly going uphill for tens of meters to see the stone paved road and the stone statue of Deng Yanda at the entrance of the tomb.

Bust of Deng Yanda

Born in 1895 in Huiyang, Guangdong Province, Deng Yanda threw himself into the revolution at the age of 16, and was a famous leader of the left wing of the Kuomintang, the founder of the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party, and a famous patriotic democrat. He served as the chief of education of the Whampoa Military Academy, and successively served as an executive member of the Kuomintang Central Committee, a member of the Central Political Commission, a member of the Presidium of the Central Military Commission, and a minister of the Central Peasant Department. After the outbreak of the "April 12 Coup" in 1927, Deng Yanda wrote articles condemning Chiang Kai-shek and Wang Jingwei, and launched anti-Chiang kai-shek activities with Soong Ching-ling and others. In 1930, the Provisional Action Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (i.e., the 3rd Party) was formed, expressing the intention to overthrow Chiang Kai-shek's reactionary dictatorship and continue to complete Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary cause.

He was brutally murdered by Chiang's dictatorship in 1931 for his steadfast pursuit of democracy and anti-Chiang's political views, and was arrested in Shanghai in 1931, then escorted to Nanjing and secretly murdered at Shazigang outside the Qilin Gate in Nanjing, where he was brutalized at the same time. At the time of his death, he was buried in the same place until 1957, after the founding of New China, when the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party relocated his bones to the east side of Linggu Temple, using the former Site of the Second Cemetery of the Former National Revolutionary Army as its tomb site.

The pine-covered Tomb Road of Deng Yanda

After the relocation of the burial, the tomb of Deng Yanda was built north and south, located in the middle of the semi-circular "Luocheng" composed of nine arcs, and there was a wide corridor in front of the tomb, lined with evergreen trees such as juniper cypress and dragon cypress on both sides, and then built a long corridor covered with wisteria on the outside, as well as a symmetrical square tomb pavilion, which can be used for people who come to worship and sweep.

Deng Yanda's tomb and its tombstone

Deng Yanda's tomb is hemispherical in shape, made of granite and cement, and there is a granite tombstone in front of the tomb, and the obverse of the tomb is engraved with the words "November 1957 A.D., Tomb of Deng Yanda Martyr, He Xiangning Inscription". In front of the monument, an altar with a very delicate garland is placed to express people's mourning and nostalgia for the pioneers.

Deng Tingzhen and Deng Yanda, the same surname Deng, are also celebrities in modern history, one was born in Nanjing, one died in Nanjing, but they are also benevolent people, the same noble feelings, worthy of eternal remembrance and commemoration by future generations.
