IT Home reported on December 16 that SK Hynix System IC, a subsidiary of South Korea's SK Hynix, will close its M8 plant in Cheongju, South Korea, in February 2022, and relocate all equipment to its factory in Wuxi, China, by May 2022.

SK Hynix separated System IC (System on Chip) in July 2017 to strengthen its foundry business. The company primarily processes 8-inch wafers and manufactures products including CMOS image sensors, display driver ICs, power management chips, PMICs, and more.
In 2018, the company formed a joint venture with the Wuxi municipal government and began building a factory. The first phase of the plant was held in the first quarter of 2020, and in the second half of the same year, the company began relocating equipment from the M8 workshop in South Korea to China to prepare to start the operation of the new plant.
IT Home learned that after the construction of the SK Hynix System IC Wuxi factory, it is expected to process 100,000 8-inch wafers per month. SK Hynix is also expanding acquisitions to expand its 8-inch foundry business. The recently completed acquisition of Key Foundry, after which the group's 8-inch monthly capacity is expected to rise to 200,000 units.
