North American weekend box office: Spielberg's new film "West Side Story" premiered and won just $10.5 million

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 12 (China News Service) -- Spielberg's song and dance film "West End Story" was released in North America this weekend and grossed only $10.5 million, narrowly topping the North American weekend box office charts.

According to the North American box office statistics website boxofficemojo.com, "West End Story" was released in 2820 theaters in North America on the opening weekend, earning $10.5 million at the box office. In 37 markets outside of North America, the film earned only $4.4 million, bringing the total global box office to $14.9 million. For this $100 million film, there is still a long way to go to recoup the cost. Next week, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released in North American theaters, which will undoubtedly have an impact on West End Story revenue.

Set in New York in the 1950s, West End Story is based on the classic Broadway musical of the same name, where white gangs and Puerto Rican gangs are hostile to each other and often clash. A man and woman from both sides fell in love at first sight, but ended in tragedy. A milestone in the history of Broadway musicals, West End Story has been a hit in the United States since 1957, winning seven awards, including the Tony Awards and the Oliver Awards. In 1961, the film version of "West End Story" was released, and the following year won 10 awards including the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director.

Because of West End Story's place in musical theater and film history, Spielberg's new film is undoubtedly one of the most talked about films in the North American market in 2021. The film, which did not sell well at the premiere weekend, received a good reputation. As of the evening of the 12th, "West End Story" had 245 film critic reviews on the review site "Rotten Tomatoes", which received a 93% rating, and more than 1,000 viewers also gave a high score of 95%. On the review site CinemaScore, the film received an "A" rating.

Influenced by "West End Story", the top three films on last week's list ranked second, third and fourth this week. Disney's animated film Full House was released in 3,750 theaters in North America and fell 28.3 percent at the box office to $9.4 million, ranking second on the charts. In the three weeks since its release, Full House has grossed $71.3 million in North America and more than $150 million worldwide.

In its fourth week of release, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released in 3,815 theaters in North America, dropping 31.5 percent at the box office and ranking third with $7.1 million. At present, the film has reached a total box office of $112 million in North America and $164.7 million worldwide.

In week 3 of its release, "House of Gucci," directed by Ridley Scott and starring many stars such as Lady Gaga, Adam Dreifer and Al Pacino, was at number four. The film, based on real historical figures, was released in 3,407 theaters in North America this week and grossed nearly $4.1 million, down 42 percent. Currently, the $75 million film grossed $41 million in North America and $93 million worldwide. (End)
