In Steven Spielberg's West End Story, not everything works—there's almost nothing blameless in the 1961 classic, but he does—and his visual translation of some of the underlying ideas in the original makes it a complement. The film is rough but more dazzling, with many highlights and little overlap with the previous one, so this remake feels both intense and reasonable. Truly beautiful.
