Qiao Junran, born in 2001 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, is currently a student majoring in arts and crafts design at Wuxi Tourism, Commerce and Trade Higher Vocational And Technical School. In 2018 and 2020, the Wuxi Liuqing bamboo carving works designed and produced won the bronze medal of the Jiangsu Provincial Arts and Crafts Excellence Award for the second time, and the graphic design works won the "Paper Beauty Oriental Style Elegant Ceremony Rhyme" 2020 Second "Ceremonial Paper" Pattern Design International Competition Excellence Award, and were repeatedly rated by the school as excellent Communist Youth League members and excellent student cadres.
My name is Qiao Junran, born in 2001 in Wuxi Shuangqixuan bamboo carving family, my grandfather and mother are the national and provincial representative inheritors of the national intangible cultural heritage project Wuxi Liuqing bamboo carving, bamboo carving art has been passed down for five generations in this family. In the second grade of junior high school, my grandfather told me about the history of the family's inheritance of bamboo carving art and the traditional techniques of bamboo carving, and I was immediately fascinated by this family heirloom craft. Therefore, as the fifth generation of Shuangqixuan, I began the learning journey of Liuqing Bamboo Carving.
With the knife as the pen - thousands of hammers began to leave green
Wuxi bamboo carving has a long history, diverse techniques, elegant and simple style, and Liuqing is a special form of bamboo carving. Bamboo carving artists write and paint on the surface of the bamboo without scraping off the skin, and then shovel off the skin outside the picture and text, forming a Yang chinese carving with bamboo green as the convex pattern and bamboo muscle as the substrate, which is called "leaving green". Formed in the last years of the Qing Dynasty, it inherited the bamboo carving skills in the form of father and daughter, mother and son, mother and daughter, and went forward to succeed each other, and famous families came out from generation to generation, and after 120 years, they did not fade. In 2008, the "Wuxi Liuqing Bamboo Carving" with Shuangqixuan as the main body was announced by the State Council as the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage (expansion) projects. And Qiao Yunran is the fifth generation of Shuangqixuan.

Although she was born in Wuxi Shuangqixuan bamboo carving family, Qiao Junran's childhood was not spent in the company of bamboo carving art, on the contrary, she thrived in the kind love of her grandfather Qiao Jinhong. And perhaps under the influence of the bamboo carving family's artistic genes, when the sixth-grade little Qiao Yunran was asked by her grandfather what she liked, she replied without hesitation, "Painting!" So I began to study the art of painting.
In the second year of Qiao Junran's junior high school, her grandfather told her about the history of inheriting the art of bamboo carving in the family and the traditional techniques of bamboo carving. She was immediately fascinated by this craft, and under the guidance of her mother, she completed her first green bamboo carving screen "Heavenly Reward". Every weekend and winter and summer vacation since then, in addition to participating in art training classes to continue learning painting techniques, Qiao Junran will always go to his grandfather and mother's studio to practice bamboo carving.
The road to learning bamboo carving is arduous, and Qiao Junran often makes mistakes when practicing. For example, when practicing the edge of the circle, it is often impossible to control the direction of the tip of the knife, so as to slide out of the pattern; when practicing shoveling, occasionally too much force will hurt the fingers; when practicing the split, the scraper will lose its charm with a little force. Sculpture is the art of subtraction, and a single mistake is irreparable.
In the midst of repeated failures and reflections, Qiao Junran's skills have also been improved. In 2018, Qiao Junran's Liuqing bamboo carving work "Spring Flower Rulu" won the "Best Creative Rookie Award", the highest award for the "Little Craftsman" in Liangxi District. A few years later, Qiao Junran won a good result in the provincial and municipal arts and crafts category with his work "Dragonfly in the Moon Season".
Bamboo ingenuity - natural workers skillfully strive for new
Shuangqixuan has been passed down for five generations, and each generation has a difficult mission. As the only person in the family who has received art education from professional colleges, Qiao Yunran said that he hopes to become a bamboo carving heir with both high cultural quality and high skill level through his own efforts, and give full play to the spirit of "craftsman", carry forward the art of bamboo carving in Liuqing, so that more people can appreciate the unique beauty of this art!
