Meta integrates the AI team into the AR/VR product development department

Recently, according to foreign media The Information, Facebook parent company Meta Platforms has merged its AI team into the Reality Labs department responsible for developing AR/VR products. The message was confirmed by Meta.

The move comes as Meta invests more in AR/VR to develop the metacosm. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sees metaversity as the next phase of the Internet's virtual immersive world.

It is understood that the Meta AI team was previously mainly responsible for detecting harmful content on the social platform Facebook, and as the organizational structure adjusts, it will focus more on efforts related to the metaverse. In addition to that, this will help Meta reduce problematic content in the apps running on its VR headset Oculus Quest series.

AI research for AR is an area where Meta has yet to launch a product, and a Meta spokesperson said teams focused on it will have more resources. He mentioned that Meta has developed avatars and hand tracking using AI in VR and is looking for ways to use AI to counter VR attacks. "The new architecture will drive closer collaboration between technology teams working to build products, platforms, and technologies to help people feel connected and present in the metaverse."

He also said his AI team will continue its existing work, including developing automated systems that try to detect harmful content such as misinformation, violence or hate speech in Meta apps. (Proofreading/lee)
