author:China Green Development Association

After the news that Sophie, a staff member of the China Green Development Council, had won the Tony Wheaton Prize for Nature Conservation, Mr. Frederick Charles Dubee, former senior counsellor of the United Nations Secretariat, former senior adviser of the Office of the Global Compact, expert adviser on the international work of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, and academician of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, sent an email to congratulate the Green Society and Sophia. The International Department of the Green Society has compiled the full text of the email as follows:

That's great!

How well deserved!

Sophia, your selection as the winner of the prestigious Tony Wheaton Conservation Award is certainly a great tribute to you and your achievements and contributions, as well as to the Green Development Council of China, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng and all of our colleagues and volunteers who together form a strong family dedicated to biodiversity conservation, giving all people the opportunity to participate and working for a common future and a fully inclusive ecological civilization.

Once again, warm and heartfelt congratulations to you!

Professor Frederick Charles Dubee

【Tips】

Tony Whitten (1953–2017) was an inspiring conservationist who advocated for biodiversity conservation in Asia and beyond. He has served as a Senior Biodiversity Specialist at the World Bank and then as Director of the Asia-Pacific Program of the International Organisation of Flora and Fauna. In addition to helping implement conservation projects in Asia, he has made world-renowned contributions to the discovery and conservation of limestone cave invertebrates — saving many species that were already going extinct in a rapidly expanding industrial civilization, establishing the IUCN Cave Invertebrate Expert Group, and naming at least 33 new species after him.

In a tribute to him, the Cambridge Conservation Initiative established the Tony Wheaton Nature Conservation Award to recognize outstanding young conservationists and biodiversity researchers from East and South-East Asia. Each year, the Awards selects five winners to recognize the work they have done and encourage them to do in the future.
