As a general in the Kuomintang, Liu Zhi never smoked, drank, or gambled in his life, but he had one only hobby - he loved money the most.
Since 1928, Liu Zhi has successively purchased a large number of real estate, land, salt wells and salt pans in Nanjing, Shanghai, Bengbu, Xinpu, Hankou, Changsha, Nanchang, Ji'an, Jiujiang and other places, worth about 5 million yuan or more.
These properties were bought under the real or pseudonym of Liu Zhi's eldest wife, Yang Zhuangli.
Liu Zhi's method of making money was very simple, that is, to use his wife to collude with his quartermaster chief, the chief of the accounting section, and others to plot for wealth.
In the spring of 1939, Liu Zhi was transferred to Chongqing as the commander of the garrison and the commander of air defense. Under the pretext that Chongqing's air defense was important, he set up an air defense unit and directly subordinated the air defense command under his leadership. To this end, he also successively set up a communication team, a protection brigade, a stretcher battalion, an engineering brigade, a motorcycle platoon, an alarm station, an air liaison post, and an intelligence transmission post.
In fact, these units had no other soldiers, and most of them were replaced by his garrison headquarters troops.
Most of the salaries received by these air defense units when they made the roster went into Liu Zhi's pocket. One of the stretcher battalions consisted of prisoners from the labour brigade of the garrison headquarters. These people were habitual pickpockets and thieves, usually wearing plain clothes or military uniforms, who stole money and goods to the labor corps and the commander of the air defense command.
Liu Zhi is so rich, will there be an accident?
Of course something will go wrong.
In early 1942, Japanese aircraft bombed Chongqing. Thousands of people suddenly entered the largest air raid shelter in Lime City at the entrance of the school yard. Due to improper management measures, thousands of people actually suffocated in the cave. Afterwards, the Air Defense Command transferred a stretcher battalion to transport the bodies. In order to seize the property, the stretcher soldiers even stuck some people who were in a state of suspended animation and could still be saved. In charge of this work were Jiang Yinbing, director of the traffic department of the Liu Zhi Garrison Headquarters, and Liu Jilong, chief of the traffic section. They ordered a search of the stretcher soldiers' pockets, and transported the seized belongings, such as gold and silver jewelry, watches, and banknotes, to Liu Zhi's home in a small car.
In such an accident, his men transported property to Liu Zhi's house three times.
Jiang and Liu were both close associates of Liu Zhi's eldest wife, Yang Zhuangli.
Unexpectedly, after these belongings were transported to the Yang family, Liu Zhi's third wife fought for me and made a big fuss, and there was a family dispute, which almost broke Liu Zhi's home.
It was precisely because of this accident that Liu Zhi was almost sent to a cell and finally dismissed.
