author:History of the Golden Wrong Knife

Chen Jiageng has done countless meaningful things, among which respecting teachers and re-teaching and establishing education is one of the most meaningful things Mr. Chen has done in his life. In the process of founding Xiamen University, he also experienced many setbacks. Among them, three times he raised donations from overseas Chinese in Nanyang, but all of them failed.

Although Chen Jiageng is an industrial giant, the needs for running a university are not cheap, and it is by no means possible to run it well by relying on personal strength alone. Two years after the establishment of Xiamen University, the school's affairs have gradually come back on track. At this time, Chen Jiageng dared to open his mouth and collect donations from the huge rich among the overseas Chinese in Nanyang. Prior to this, Mr. Chen had borne the huge expenses required to establish Xiamen University alone.

When Chen Jiageng founded Xiamen University, among the overseas Chinese in Nanyang, Fujian had the largest number of overseas Chinese and the richest. At that time, there were several overseas Chinese in Fujian who reached the asset level of tens of millions, and there were even more at the level of millions. At the beginning of xingxue, there were educators who said to Chen Jiageng that he thought he knew many rich overseas Chinese in Nanyang and raised hundreds of thousands of yuan. However, in the two years since the university was opened, not a single point has been raised.

Chen Jiageng knew that it would be very difficult to run Xiamen University well on his own. After he returned to Nanyang, he met a giant in Singapore, who was from the same township as Chen Jiageng and was from Tong'an County. This person is known as the "Nanyang Sugar King", with assets of more than 10,000,000 yuan and an annual profit of more than 20 to 30 million. After Chen Jiageng knew him, he went back and wrote a long letter to him. The letter detailed the development of education in Fujian Province, the importance of Xiamen University, etc., hoping to see the hometown, invest 5 million yuan as a xiamen university fund; or more or less; you can also donate to a department of medicine alone; or you can do as you wish.

After the letter was sent, the "Sugar King" did not even personally call back, but only asked his subordinates to call Chen Jiageng and inform him that the letter had been received. There is no mention of the funding of financial assistance. Later, Chen Jiageng asked people if they had the will, and the people replied that there was no intention in this regard. This is the first fundraising failure that Mr. Chen has encountered.

The second time, Chen Jiageng met a rich overseas Chinese in Bandung with assets of several million dong. Chen Jiageng learned that his assets were rich, and there was a brother in his hometown in Xiamen who was opening a money house, so he had the idea of raising money from him. At this time, Chen Jiageng had donated funds to undertake Xiamen University alone for more than four years, and had never named any building on the campus after himself. He proposed to Fuqiao that he donate 100,000 dong to establish the library of Xiamen University, and the name of the library can be named Fuqiao, if it is less than 60,000 or 70,000 dong, and it is also possible to donate funds according to the progress of the construction period. Unfortunately, this fundraising was not successful either.

In Surabaya, Java, Chen Jiageng met another "coffee king", also a Tong'an person, in his forties and rich assets. Mr. Chen entrusted someone to collect donations from him and did not want to be rejected directly.

After many failed fundraising attempts for Xiamen University, Mr. Chen sighed. Not to mention tens of millions of yuan, even if it is only 180,000 yuan, it is quite difficult. In addition to disappointment, Mr. Chen also sighed, only blaming the traditional habits of the Chinese people, the hardships and hardships of a lifetime, mostly for the sake of their children and grandchildren; even if the bloodline has been extinguished, they are not willing to pay half a point for the society, nor do they plan for their own reputation, which is really stupid. I would rather be siphoned off by tens of millions of estate taxes by my home country after death than donate a cent to my hometown.

The tradition of counting for future generations is not unique to this world, but has lasted for thousands of years. In ancient times, there was no country, it was all family world, and it was understandable. Since entering the modern era, the concept of the state has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and it is not surprising that the people do not yet have the concept of "having a country first and then having a home", but still hold the concept of "planning for their children and grandchildren" and are unwilling to raise funds to repay society.

Although Mr. Chen suffered three failed fundraising experiences, Xiamen University was funded by Mr. Chen and built it on time. The development of Xiamen University to this day is absolutely inseparable from Mr. Chen Jiageng's early donations.

Throughout the ages, Mr. Chen Jiageng has been worthy of the title of "the banner of overseas Chinese and the glory of the nation," which was given to him by Chairman Mao.

It is not easy to make a great thing in a person's life; and Mr. Chen Jiageng has done many things, which are innumerable.
