Time goes back to 1937, and with the outbreak of the War of Resistance, our country has experienced many tribulations. At that time, although Chen was abroad, he was still always worried about the wind and grass at home. Whenever there was a need, he must charge forward, and even at that time, he donated as much as 1.1 billion, which was shocking at the time, and it can be seen how strong his patriotism was.
In 1940, he returned to China as the president of the South Overseas Chinese Association, but after seeing the lights and greenery within the Kuomintang, he lost his inner support for their behavior. Old Jiang then took him to Kong Xiangxikai's hotel to hold a welcome ceremony, and Elder Chen was surprised. Not because of how extravagant and luxurious this place is, nor because it is so pompous. Rather, as a senior official of the Kuomintang, it is really undeserved to open a hotel of such a scale without permission. There is also the fact that Old Jiang actually agreed to treat such a place as a place for receiving guests, which was undignified.
When he arrived in Chongqing, his stunned expression was even more tense. Even the drivers who were sent were somewhat immodest, pulling people at will, and even cheekily begging people for tea money, otherwise they would not let people get off the bus, which made Elder Chen helpless. It was also because of the superposition of various reasons that Elder Chen was very disappointed in the behavior of the Kuomintang.
It was at that time that he began to set his sights on Yan'an, so he began to visit Yan'an. Although this matter was known to Lao Jiang and tried to stop it, Elder Chen decided that he was not moved, and resolutely embarked on a journey north.
On 13 May, he was personally welcomed by the President. Standing in front of the caves in northern Shaanxi, Elder Chen's first feeling was that the folk customs were simple and simple, and he had a very strong feeling of wanting to be close. Entering the house, there is no fancy decoration, but it is better than clean and tidy. In the process of eating, you can even hear the noise of villagers talking outside. When he went out, he saw a group of villagers outside, and the enthusiasm and happiness were sprinkled on his face. Seeing such a situation, the feeling of being close to the military and civilian families made him see hope for the future.
Elder Chen spent 8 days in Yan'an, but he saw the feeling of "home" in the real world. But one of the most memorable things he later recorded in his memoirs. He said that one day it was going to be a morning meeting, because there were more people, but the space was smaller, so the location was more crowded. The Chairman did not sit in the right place, but sat in the corner of the table. Standing next to me was a clerk keeping a recorder, holding a piece of paper and notes, but it was a little inconvenient because he was standing. At this time, the chairman saw this situation, so he signaled to the people around him, asked them to squeeze a little more, and then made a place for the soldier so that he could record the meeting. Elder Chen said that when he saw such a small detail, he was a little moved at that time. There is no official authority, no shelf, only simplicity and harmony.
It was from this small matter that Elder Chen was even more determined in his heart for our party and decided to follow it for a long time.
On the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chen Lao was invited by the chairman to participate in the Political Consultative Conference and became a standing committee member. Later, he lived in Xiamen for a long time and made great contributions to the establishment of Xiamen University and Jimei University. Today, The Jiageng College of Xiamen University was established in his honor.
On August 12, 1961, Elder Chen died of illness.
