Cao Yu, whose real name is Wan Jiabao, was born on September 24, 1910 in Qianjiang, Hubei Province, to a feudal bureaucratic family in Tianjin, whose father, Wan Dezun, was not only the secretary of Li Yuanhong, the president of the Republic of China, but also the commander of the division commanding thousands of troops and horses.
First, let's talk about the origin of the pen name "Cao Yu". It was in 1926 that the 16-year-old Wan Jiabao published his debut novel "Where to Wake Up Tonight in the Evening Wine" in Tianjin Yong Bao, and the first pen name was "Cao Yu", that is, his surname "Wan" was split into "Cao" and "Yu", and the "Cao" was taken by the harmonic pronunciation "Cao" in order to be more like a surname, so the combination of the two became "Cao Yu".
Cao Yu is talented and intelligent, he has been a "child prodigy" since he was a child, he was admitted to Nankai Middle School at the age of 12, and then to Nankai University at the age of 20, and was admitted to Tsinghua University from Nankai University at the age of 20, directly transferred to the second year of the Department of Western Literature, and quickly became a prominent figure in Tsinghua Park because of his outstanding talent.

However, these amazing works written by Cao Yu were all born in the 1930s and 1940s, and in the entire 47 years after the founding of New China, Cao Yu barely wrote two and a half plays, which were still mediocre works.
The first half of Cao Yu's life was a genius—talented and full of good works; the second half of Cao Yu's life was a mediocre talent—doing nothing, and there were no good works. This is the famous "Cao Yu phenomenon" in the history of modern Chinese literature.
