Huawei this week donated the "Euler" open source operating system to the Open Atom Open Source Foundation. This is another important step in Huawei's operating system after Hongmeng.

Why is Euler important?

As a basic software, in the development of information technology for decades, different operating systems have been formed in different fields, such as server operating systems, PC desktop operating systems, smart phone operating systems, Internet of Things operating systems, embedded operating systems for communication devices, cloud operating systems for public clouds, embedded operating systems for industrial equipment, etc. Software and hardware technology is difficult to share, resulting in a "chimney" in the industry and between industries.

Huawei's new Euler open source operating system released in 2019 aims to solve the problem of collaboration. Deng Taihua, vice president of Huawei and president of the computing product line, introduced that Euler is an operating system for all scenarios of infrastructure, supporting diverse devices in the southbound direction, covering all-scenario applications in the northbound, connecting Hongmeng horizontally, and achieving ecological interoperability through capability sharing.

China has vigorously developed the open source industry

The Open Atom Open Source Foundation is the first open source foundation in China, which has been operating for more than a year and has absorbed more than a dozen important open source projects of domestic leading enterprises.

At present, global open source projects basically cover the mainstream technology field. Open source has become an important means to establish a technology ecology, in order to create a new technology ecology, almost all will use open source to do.

Deng Taihua said that there is still a relatively large gap between the basic capabilities of China's open source system and leading countries. But China has the largest open source application market, has the largest supply of software talents, and China is most qualified to become an open source power.

Liao Xiangke, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, believes that open source is an important way to develop basic software such as operating systems. At present, a large number of domestic operating systems are based on foreign upstream open source communities for secondary development, and a large number of software developers contribute to foreign open source communities, so it is urgent to build an open source community rooted in China.

As the global computing industry ushers in the golden decade of architectural innovation, from the past Intel, AMD-led universal computing into the era of artificial intelligence diversity computing power, the diversification of artificial intelligence chips, China is ushering in the "golden window" to build a domestic operating system ecology.

Wang Zhijun, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that Euler, a heavyweight open source project in the field of operating systems, donated to the foundation for incubation, is a useful attempt for China to seize the development opportunity of the era of the Internet of Everything, build the next generation of operating systems with open source as the starting point, and build a solid "digital base" for economic and social development.

Huawei builds a digital economy ecosystem

The development of the digital economy requires the base of basic software. Deng Taihua said that american companies have led the way around the ecological construction of communication computing, artificial intelligence, basic software and hardware. In the future, with the development of the digital economy, the development of China's IT industry should take root and have its own platform for basic software and hardware.

Since the Euler system was open sourced, it has received a positive response from the industry. According to reports, more than 300 enterprises and nearly 10,000 community developers have joined, becoming the most dynamic open source community in China. More than 10 partners such as Kirin Software have launched server operating systems based on Euler, and have entered multiple industries such as government, operators, finance, and power, achieving large-scale commercial use of more than 600,000 sets.

At present, China's three major telecom operators are supporting "Euler". China Telecom was the first full-service in the telecommunications industry to choose the Euler technology route, and at the same time, it was the first among operators to launch the dual versions of x86 and ARM independently developed based on Euler, and has now achieved large-scale commercialization.

Huawei donated Euler to transform Euler's open source from an enterprise-led model to a model in which industry partners participate together, and the most important task facing euler in the future is still ecological construction. Huawei's operating systems for connectivity, computing, and cloud service-related services will fully adopt Euler's technology route. Huawei will build its own version of the operating system and promise not to do euler commercial distributions.

China's basic software is weak and requires huge investment. Deng Taihua said that the donation is only the beginning, and will continue to increase investment in technological innovation, talent training, ecological construction and other aspects in the future, and plans to set up an Euler Ecological Innovation Center to provide platform, technology, funds and policy support for partners.
