Born on April 8, 1910 in Seoul, North Korea, Kim Yan came to Shanghai alone in 1927 and joined the film in 1929. In 1930, he co-starred with Ruan Lingyu in "Wild Grass Idle Flowers".
In 1931, he co-starred with Ruan Lingyu again in "Love and Obligation" and "Peach Blossom Crying Blood".

Jin Yan fell in love with Qin Yi and was married in 1947. After 1949, the couple entered the film together. Golden Flame suffered a stomach injury during the filming of The Eagle in the Storm in 1957 and never recovered.
