In a Feb. 26 robbery at a Chinese restaurant in New York, the U.S., where a 46-year-old Man of Chinese Descent, Zheng Yong, was assassinated in response to a counterattack, and New York police said on March 1 that a man had been arrested.
According to US media reports, New York police tracked the car of 45-year-old suspect William Smith and arrested him on February 28, local time. Smith, who was tried and pleaded guilty late on March 1, faces murder, robbery and three assault counts.
Police said Smith and at least two accomplices attacked Zheng Yong that day, and police are still pursuing Smith's accomplices. Smith has a previous record of 13 arrests, at least one with a weapon, drunk driving in 2010 and arrested in 2007 for selling drugs. He was also convicted of manslaughter and possession of weapons in 1996 and sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison. In February 2006, he was released on conditional parole.
On Feb. 26, near Eighth Avenue in Brooklyn's Sunset Park Area, three robbers stormed the basement of a Chinese restaurant and robbed the cash and cellphones of those present, and Zheng Yong was stabbed while trying to stop the robbers, and he died after being taken to New York University Langone Hospital.
Zheng Yong immigrated to the United States from Fujian at the age of 19, and when the accident occurred, Zheng Yong stayed in New York to deal with things, and he and more than 20 friends dined in a restaurant that night. Zheng Yong's relatives and friends said that he had not returned home to see his mother in the past 30 years, and originally planned to return to his hometown to visit, but due to the postponement of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, he did not want to die now.
It is reported that Zheng Yong's father died many years ago, and his mother and sister in China are still unaware of his death.
