The Simpson Case (Part 1): Even the president had a headache, causing the Trial of the Century in which American society stopped functioning

In order to wait for the result, even President Clinton pushed off the national affairs, and Secretary of State Baker also postponed the speech;

The Wall Street stock market also nearly stopped trading.

At this time, the whole United States came to a standstill, and in the ten minutes before and after the verdict was pronounced, the people of the whole United States stopped almost all activities, did not work, did not attend classes, did not call, did not go to the toilet, and everyone was listening to Simpson's verdict.

About 140 million Americans are watching and listening to the final verdict of the Trial of the Century. At that time, the total population of the United States was only 260 million people.

Passengers waiting at Los Angeles International Airport were delayed in multiple flights in order to see the live results of the live television broadcast, and even when the ground staff urged them to board, they were yelled at by many passengers: "Shut up."

The Chicago Board of Trade, the world's largest, also became silent in the minutes of the verdict, and the deafening shouts of the usual traders disappeared.

At an ordinary bank in Atlanta, the cashier stopped counting money, the queue of customers disappeared, and everyone gathered around the bank lobby to wait for the verdict of the live broadcast.

Although the New York Stock Exchange, the most prosperous trading in the world, officially stopped trading, but all the stock prices changed almost no change and no trading volume, until after the verdict was announced, after the display screen played "Simpson was convicted of all crimes", the lively stock trading returned to normal.

At that time, the civilian Internet was not yet popular, and even mobile phones were only the size of bricks, and postmen in the streets of the United States used radios to get results from company dispatches, shouting all the way to tell pedestrians.

It's hard to say, senior government officials, that anything is more important than the business at hand.

But on this day, all branches of the U.S. government, from the White House to Congress, from federal agencies to state-level departments, were all about to shut down, and all the press conferences, hearings, and briefings scheduled for them were postponed and canceled. The police and national guard of the Beautiful Country are fully armed and waiting in strict formation to prevent possible riots and social unrest after the verdict is pronounced.

This is the real scene when the Simpson verdict was pronounced on October 3, 1995. On this day, Americans who advocate freedom and individual liberation are at the same time, the whole country is united, hundreds of millions of people in different places are waiting for the same result. Not even the fierce U.S. election has made all Americans so nervous and concerned.

Today's first episode, first of all, let's talk about the background and simple story of the Simpson case.

The Simpson Case (Part 1): Even the president had a headache, causing the Trial of the Century in which American society stopped functioning

In June 1994, a murder occurred in a high-end residential area of Los Angeles. The deceased were a woman in her thirties and a man in her twenties, both white.

The incident was sensational at the beginning, because the female deceased was also the hostess of the house, she was the famous Black Football Superstar in the United States, a Hollywood movie star, a successful businessman in high society--- Oj Simpson's ex-wife. The suspect targeted by the police is the big star Simpson.

Born in 1947 in San Francisco to a poor black family, Simpson represented THEA and won the Heisman Award, the national college football league's highest honor.

After entering the professional league, he played as a main player for the Buffalo Hawks in New York and then the San Francisco Gold Diggers, setting a record of one season of sprinting 2003 yards with the ball, a record that has not been broken to this day. Hailed as the best running front in the history of professional football competitions.

At the same time, Simpson also shot orange juice advertisements for famous beverage companies, and in the 1960s and 1970s, orange juice drinks had just emerged in American society, which also further popularized Simpson's popularity.

And Simpson is his last name, his full name abbreviation is o.j. Simpson, o.j. is his initials, which happens to be the abbreviation of orange juice orange juice. So Oj's pronunciation is catchy, and it once became synonymous with American sports heroes and super advertising stars.

Hertz, the largest car rental company in the United States, hired OJ Simpson as an image ambassador, which had the slogan: Go Oj, Go. It swept the country and made people fall in love with the black star. Throughout the history of black Americans, this national influence and popularity of black people is the first.

The boxing kings of the same period, Ali and Tyson, were far less popular in the United States at that time than Simpson.

After retiring from sports, Simpson continued to devote himself to film and television and advertising, playing the main role in many famous American films and TELEVISION series, and I remember there was a comedy film "Bald Detective" series, in which he was particularly eye-catching.

Simpson also worked as a sports commentator on two major U.S. television stations: ABC ABC and NBC National Broadcasting.

It can be said that OJ Simpson is a well-known multi-habitat star in the United States. As a black man, he laid a very good template for the many black stars who rose up in the future. Trapeze Jordan, the king of pop music Michael Jackson, as well as Kobe, James, various black film stars, singers and so on, have all once made Simpson an idol of childhood.

O.J. Simpson arguably made history and became the first black person in the true sense of the word to influence American society. For the convenience of understanding, for example, he is like the hottest star plus the household advertising traffic star plus the movie film and television star plus the famous program host, just a title is enough to scenery for a lifetime, and the popularity of so many channels, it is conceivable that Simpson's influence in the United States at that time was great.

After becoming famous, Simpson was very keen to participate in various high-class white society activities and clubs, and had no interest in the black community. In order to "get rid of the black", he even spared no expense to hire a pronunciation correction expert, repeatedly practiced, and changed a thick black slum accent.

In 1977, Simpson fell in love with Nicole Brown, a blonde white waitress, at a fine dining restaurant at the age of 30, just after turning eighteen.

Simpson and his first black wife also had three children. It was not until later, after his youngest daughter drowned in swimming because of neglect, that Simpson blamed his wife and subsequently divorced his first black wife.

And in 1985, Simpson and Nicole finally held a wedding. After the marriage, Nicole suspected that Simpson was out in trouble and had multiple affairs.

Therefore, the two often quarreled, the relationship rifted, Nicole even called the 911 police number many times, accusing Simpson of domestic violence.

The two eventually divorced in 1992, and both were given to Nicole to raise a man and a woman.

Returning to the beginning of the case, on the night of June 12, 1994, a puppy barked incessantly in the quiet rich district of Los Angeles, an unusual phenomenon that caught the attention of neighbors. Then a walker spotted the dog, with blood on its paws, and was very stubborn in leading him somewhere.

He followed, and finally found the bodies of the victims and blood on the ground in the garden corridor of Nicole's house. So he called the police, and that's how it started.

The Simpson Case (Part 1): Even the president had a headache, causing the Trial of the Century in which American society stopped functioning

The female deceased was Nicole Brown Simpson, while the other male deceased was Rong Goldman, a part-time waiter at a nearby Italian fine dining restaurant. The two were covered in blood and died by slitting their throats with a sharp object. Both died from sharp stabs while Nick and her ex-husband Simpson's two children were asleep in the upstairs room.

According to the police report, Nicole and the children ate at an Italian restaurant not far from home that night, and later in the day, Nicole called the restaurant to tell the waiter, Goldman, to help her find the sunglasses that had been forgotten on the table. When Goldman found it, he told his colleague that he would go to Nicole's house after work to return his sunglasses.

The public opinion media recognized: "It was at the wrong time, in the wrong place."

After the incident, the Los Angeles West District Police Department sent four police officers to the residence of the big star Simpson. On the one hand, it was to inform the news of the murder of his ex-wife and let Simpson take the two underage children from the police station to take care of them. On the other hand, it is also because he is the ex-husband of the deceased, and must also be under the attention of the police.

The Simpson Case (Part 1): Even the president had a headache, causing the Trial of the Century in which American society stopped functioning

At this time, a white criminal police officer named Foreman volunteered to lead the team. During a family dispute in 1985, Nicole was beaten by Simpson and called the police, and Foreman had come to their door to deal with their domestic violence case and knew the exact address of Simpson's home. The Foreman officer was caught with a major loophole by defense counsel at a later stage of the trial. (More on that later in the show.) )

So, at 5 a.m. on June 13, four white police officers arrived at the walled Simpson House. They rang the bell at the front door for a long time, but no one answered the door.

The Simpson Case (Part 1): Even the president had a headache, causing the Trial of the Century in which American society stopped functioning

At this time, Foreman searched along the wall alone and found a white Ford Mustang SUV parked on the road behind the wall. After careful observation, Foreman shouted for Sheriff Vanat to come and look into it, saying that tiny blood had been found on the door handle of the driver's position.

Vanat and two other officers were horrified to see the blood, and fearing that the lives of those inside the house were in danger, decided to enter the house for an emergency search. Also after Climbing the Wall, Foreman found a blood-stained glove and other evidence in the back garden.

But Simpson wasn't home, and he had earlier flown to Chicago for a charity golf tournament hosted by Hertz Car Rentals the next day.

At this time, Kitu, a friend who lived in the room of the Simpson family, said: "There was an earthquake-like sound outside the walls of the room that night." The taxi driver who took Simpson to the airport claimed that "at about 10 p.m. on June 12, he went to Simpson's house to ring the doorbell and no one responded, and when it was close to 11 o'clock, he found a tall black man, who looked very similar in height and body type to Simpson in the dark."

After hurriedly running back to the house from outside the street and ringing the doorbell again, Simpson responded, came out with his luggage and said he had fallen asleep at home before, and then drove to the airport together."

Therefore, the police contacted Simpson through the hotel in Chicago and informed him that his ex-wife had been killed.

Early in the morning, Simpson hurriedly left the hotel for the return journey to Los Angeles. In the process, two hotel employees told prosecutors. When they helped Simpson put his luggage in the trunk of the car, they all noticed that Simpson looked a little anxious. But others, including the airport clerk who checked Simpson's ticket, said Simpson looked perfectly normal at the time.

At 12:00 p.m. on June 13, when Simpson hurried back to Los Angeles from Chicago, police had cordoned off his home. Officers Vanat and Rangi, who presided over the investigation, asked him to come to the police headquarters to clarify some of the doubts, and Simpson casually agreed.

Simpson's personal lawyer strongly objected and demanded to accompany him, but Simpson insisted that he had absolutely nothing to do with the murder and did not need a lawyer, so he was questioned by the police for an hour alone.

Considering his reputation, the police released Simpson without in-depth cross-examination. Police found Simpson injured at the time. He explained: "I was injured by the excessive excitement of breaking the mirror when I received the news of my ex-wife's death."

After several days of investigation, the police decided to list Simpson as the main suspect.
