Inside, there is a small theater hidden deep on the fifth floor. After more than a year of renovation, on November 4, the small theater came back with black technology and was renamed "new box new space for performing arts".
Meanwhile, from November 19 to 21, the first residency concert tailored for the theater, "Rock and Roll Nine Pickups", will be available.

The "testing ground" of the Wisdom Theater
The Shanghai Grand Theatre has long had the idea of building a smart theater, and the upgrading of the small theater has assumed the role of a "testing ground".
Originally a "black box" theater, often staged "small and beautiful" theatrical works, the last box-sealing play was the first "Small Theater International Theater Performance Season". After more than a year of renovation, the small theater has returned as a new new box: not only drama, in the future, it can also support a variety of performance types such as folk music, jazz, talk shows, high-definition screenings and so on.
It is understood that the performance area of the new box is more than 140 square meters, the audience seats can be set up to 258 seats, and the stage machinery has 36 hanging poles and 190 speakers.
In the same type of theater in China, the new box has a number of innovations: it is equipped with a "four-dimensional holographic sound" sound system, which can adapt to the soundstage requirements of different types of performances; it sets up a "standardized grille transport track", which is applied to the intelligent hanging system, which can meet the actual use of the stage, lighting, and speaker positions; it also has another black technology "real-time motion capture keying module", which can record stage performances in real time and finely, and the actors do not need to wear additional instruments. The saved performance content can lay the foundation for subsequent re-performances.
"The hanging poles of the old theater are fixed, fixed will have limitations, and technology should provide more space for artists, preferably anywhere to hang things, and there will be no restrictions on creation." In terms of exterior design, the interior of the new box retains a black and gray tone, echoing the positioning of the original "black box"; at the same time, the backstage area is removed from the ceiling, which not only facilitates the transportation of the stage set, but also broadens the actor's rest area, from pre-performance makeup to costume ironing can be completed in the backstage area.

On November 4, the new box opened its doors and welcomed the first audience to unlock the secrets of the stage.

Launched by the Shanghai Grand Theatre Creation Center, this project aims to discover new voices, cultivate new works, and use the performing arts resources accumulated over the years to provide a stage for newcomers and an experimental field for new works. In addition to performance forms such as gala, the new box can also carry script recitation, singing and acting workshops, and fragment display, becoming the cradle of new works.
As the first performance of the new box musical Gala, the "Rock Nine Picks" concert will appear in late November. At that time, Zhang Qindan, Wu Junpeng, Ye Jiawen, Du Yayi, Yin Zhibo and other new musicals will sing popular songs in musicals such as "Yoshiya Rental", "Almost Normal", "Rock Age", "Wanshi Superstar" and other musicals, and show a trendy rock concert.
