Ruce Sabajina appeared in court with 20 co-accused in Kigali, rwanda, on the same day. During the trial, he challenged the rwandan court's lack of authority to try the foreigner and requested through counsel that the court return him to Belgium, where he was a national, for trial. The Prosecution states that the Rwandan courts are competent to hear cases that occur in their territory and that Ruce Sabajina also holds Rwandan nationality, where he was born.

Russei Sabbajina, 66, had lived abroad for a long time before his arrest. The film "Hotel Rwanda", which is said to be based on his experience, tells the story of the hotel manager's protagonist who protected many innocent people from murder during the 1994 Rwandan massacre, and the film has been nominated for several Oscars and Golden Globes.

However, the authenticity of Ruse Sabajina's experience has been widely questioned in Rwanda, with holocaust survivors believing it to be untrue.

Rwanda's Bureau of Investigation announced last August that he was the subject of an international wanted warrant for terrorism, arson, kidnapping, murder and injury of innocent civilians, linked to two attacks in southern Rwanda in 2018.
