Speaking about the 20 defendants, including Ruse Sabbajina, Judge Atreus Mukamulenzi said, Reuters said: "They should be recognized as members of the terrorist group 'Movement for Democratic Change in Rwanda – National Liberation Front' (MRCD-FLN)." They attacked people, some of them in their homes, some on the way to their cars. ”
According to previous reports, Ruce Sabajina, 67, had lived overseas for a long time before his arrest. The film "Hotel Rwanda", which is said to be based on his experience, tells the story of the hotel manager's protagonist who protected many innocent people from murder during the 1994 Rwandan massacre, and the film has been nominated for several Oscars and Golden Globes. However, the authenticity of Ruse Sabajina's experience has been widely questioned in Rwanda, with holocaust survivors believing it to be untrue.
When the Global Times reporter visited the Holocaust Museum in Rwanda in 2018, the docent also told reporters that the film mistakenly portrayed Ruce Sabajina as a hero, when the Hutus government was using the survivors of the hotel as hostages to bargain with the Rwandan Patriotic Front. Survivors say Russet Sabbajina extorted money from refugees and expelled those who could not afford to pay, and many accused him of profiteering from the tragedy at the time of and after the tragedy.
Last August, rwanda's bureau of investigation announced the arrest of Ruce Sabajina at Kigali International Airport, saying he was wanted on an international wanted list on terrorism, arson, kidnapping, murder and injury of innocent civilians, linked to two attacks in southern Rwanda in 2018.
In 1994, extremist forces in Rwanda's Hutu government carried out organized massacres of Tutsi and Hutu moderates, killing some 500,000 to 1 million of Rwanda's more than 7 million people in 100 days from April to July. The then opposition RPF counter-attacked home, stopped the massacre and overthrew the then Rwandan government. Rwanda then entered a period of political stability and a rapid economic development. But in the border areas, rebel attacks occur from time to time.
