After all, oil painting puts realism first, and after mastering sketching, it is too much for an oil painter. To train sketching skills, you start with a still life. People who have studied at the Academy of Fine Arts must have seen the masterpiece "David" by the "Renaissance" sculptor Michelangelo, and for the convenience of teaching, these "Davids" usually appear in the form of plaster statues.
Drawing a sketch with reference to "David" is the first step for students to learn to draw.
The Central Academy of Fine Arts has a painting known as "caucus's best david", this work is from the hand of Yu Hong, a teacher of CAFA's oil painting department, who created this sketch in 1984 and appeared on the cover of the national art sketch textbook the following year. Today, 37 years later, the drawing is still recognized as one of the best to date.

There is a famous saying in the Central Academy of Fine Arts: Yu Hong's David sketches have always been imitated, but they have never been surpassed.
Behind this sentence, there is definitely Yu Hong's solid sketching skills and attitude towards excellence in art.
In fact, many talented people at the Central Academy of Fine Arts have painted David statues, and the first acclaimed David statue was created by the famous printmaker Xu Bing, born in 1955, in the early 1980s.
At that time, the dean was Mr. Jin Shangyi, who inadvertently came to Xu Bing's studio, and Xu Bing's newly created sketch of "David" caught his attention. Perhaps Xu Bing's painting was too wonderful, and Jin Shangyi waited in front of the sketch for a long time and was reluctant to leave.
A few days later, a sentence circulated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts: Mr. Jin Shangyi said that Xu Bing's "David" sketch was the best one drawn by CAFA since the establishment of the academy in 1950.

Soon, Xu Bing, who was in his 20s, became famous in CAFA and was regarded as a promising new artist.
However, within a few years, the sketches of David, a talented woman born in 1966, suddenly replaced the status of Xu Bing's sketches in the minds of teachers and students. So that in the next 30 years, Yu Hong's sketch was copied and studied by every student as a model.
In the face of Yu Hong's sketches, Xu Bing said with satisfaction at an opening ceremony: I once painted a portrait of "David" in the early 1980s, which was praised by the old dean Mr. Jin Shangyi as the best one since the establishment of the hospital, but now, Yu Hong's portrait of "David" broke this record, and I also admit that her "David" painting is indeed better than mine.
Yu Hong entered the Affiliated High School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1980 to study fine arts, and then entered caUCS for further studies, and successively obtained bachelor's and master's degrees. On the eve of her undergraduate graduation, in the summer of 1984, her teacher assigned her to draw a sketch portrait of "David", and after receiving the task, she attached great importance to it and spent four weeks to create this small sketch.

In the work, Yu Hong integrated her understanding of sketching, four years of accumulated skills, and love for art, and it was not surprising that she did not expect to create a masterpiece with a big atmosphere and a big style, and later it was praised by everyone.
Oil painting students have been working with sketching since they entered the school of fine arts, and painting "David" portrait sketching is an indispensable subject and the top priority of training realistic skills.
Yu Hong later said: Practice painting plaster like pay attention to space, structure, volume, and must be focused when painting, otherwise it will be out of shape. It was from this portrait of David that I could feel what I was painting.

After graduating with a master's degree, relying on the solid foundation and artistic literacy of school training, Yu Hong's comprehensive strength is still outstanding among many students, so she was retained to teach at the school. By this time, she had amassed dozens of works in her hands, most of which were oil paintings and a few of which were drawings.
Yu Hong thought to herself: Why not hold a small exhibition of paintings and let the audience test how their works are.
Therefore, with the support of several friends, Yu Hong's first solo exhibition was successfully held a year after her graduation, attracting many art lovers to visit.
What Yu Hong did not expect was that in just a few days of the exhibition, all her works were bought by collectors, setting a record for the sale of works by young teachers at CAFA at that time.

Yu Hong's husband is the famous oil painter Liu Xiaodong, who is also a teacher of Central American, and they entered the marriage hall in 1993. After marriage, because the two have common interests and careers, there are always endless topics to discuss, and they paint together in their leisure time, communicate together, give advice to each other's works, grow together, promote the steady improvement of their painting level, become more and more famous in the circle, and win art awards many times.
Today, they are all the best oil painters of the same age, and they belong to the successful people in the painting circle.
Faced with the current satisfactory situation, Yu Hong couldn't help but think of her grandmother. Her name "Yu Hong" was given to her by her grandmother, who when she named her, hoped that she would "become more and more popular", and now it seems that she has basically fulfilled her grandmother's wish. People who know her well know that people in the oil painting circle like to call her "big sister", which is undoubtedly an affirmation of her.

Yu Hong's oil paintings also exude a strong personal style. Her oil paintings are good at strengthening the role of color and brushstrokes on the basis of realism, and relying on the way of time and space stitching, the real real life and illusory dreams, the materials of the East and the techniques of the West, the classical aesthetic and the modern consciousness, these opposing elements are integrated, thus presenting a brilliant visual impact and full of artistic tension.
Although she has achieved a little success in oil painting, Yu Hong does not recommend that people with impure purposes study art.
