The Seven Sons of Jian'an (建安七子) was the collective name of seven literary figures during the Three Kingdoms period (196-220) at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, including Kong Rong, Chen Lin, Wang Cang, Xu Gan, and Ruan Yu (ruǎn yǔ) (Ruan Ji was the son of Ruan Yu, Ruan Xian was Ruan Yu's grandson, and Ruan Xian and Ruan Xian were uncles and nephews, becoming a good story in the literary world), Ying Yue (yáng), and Liu Zhen (zhēn). Because the seven sons of Jian'an once lived together in the Wei capital Yecheng (邺城, in present-day Western Linzhang County, Hebei), they were also known as the "Seven Sons of Yizhong".

In the "Seven Sons", except for Kong Rong and Cao Cao's political disagreements and final execution, the other six were attached to Cao Cao's father and son. Except for Ruan Yu, the other five died of an epidemic in the winter of the twenty-second year (217) of Jian'an.

The "Seven Sons of Jian'an" and "Three Caos" constituted the main force of Jian'an writers, and were regarded as representatives of the literary achievements of the Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Han Dynasty, and contributed to the development of poetry, endowment, and prose.

Among the "Seven Sons of Jian'an", Wang Yue had the highest achievement in poetry, and Liu Xun considered him to be the "crown of the seven sons". Wang Cang's representative works are "Seven Lamentations" and "Climbing the Stairs", which best represent the spirit of Jian'an literature. The Seven Lamentations "Go out and see nothing, and the white bones cover the plains." There are hungry women on the road, and the children abandon the grass. "The real writes about the chaotic state.

Today, I introduce one of the "Seven Sons of Jian'an" - Wang Cang.

One of the "Seven Sons of Jian'an" - Wang Cang

In literature, Wang Yue, together with Kong Rong, Xu Gan, Chen Lin, Ruan Yu, Ying Yue, and Liu Zhen, was called the "Seven Sons of Jian'an".

Wang Cang was one of the most accomplished of the "Seven Sons", and was called "King Cao" along with Cao Zhi. The great liang dynasty literary critic Liu Xun praised Wang Cang as the "crown of the seven sons" in the "Wenxin Carved Dragon Cailuo".

Wang Cang's thirteen years in Jian'an returned to Cao Cao, and his works before that were either in the war at the end of the Han Dynasty, or wrote about his feelings of exile and ambition when he was exiled to Jingzhou, such as "Seven Lamentations"; after returning to Cao Cao, his works mostly praised Cao Jun's conquests, and the representative works were "Conscription Poems". There are more than 20 surviving articles by Wang Cangfu, the most famous of which is the "Denglou Fu" written during the period of the guest residence in Jingzhou. Wang Cang's prose is more successful than his "Book of Advice to Yuan Tanshu for Liu Jingzhou" and "For Liu Jingzhou and Yuan Shangshu". The Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms records that Wang Yue wrote nearly 60 poems, endowments, treatises, and discussions. The Ming Dynasty Zhang Puji has the "Collection of Wang Shi Zhongji".

【10,000 volumes】

Wang Cang's collection of books is as high as 10,000 volumes, mainly from Gifts from Cai Yong. It is said that Wang Cang has had a talented name since he was young, and is appreciated by the scholar Cai Yong. It is said that one day, when Cai Yong heard that Wang Yue was begging to see him outside the door, he hurried out to greet him, and he couldn't even take care of his shoes when they fell out ("Upside down to welcome him"). Cai Yong praised Wang Cang's talent and said, "My family's books and articles should be given to him", that is, "all the books and articles in my family's collection should be given to him." It is said that after Cai Yong's death, he fulfilled his promise and gave Wang Cang more than 6,000 volumes of his book collection. In his old age, his collection of books reached 10,000 volumes.

【Donkey Mourning/Donkey Mourning】

On the 24th day of the 24th spring month (217) of Jian'an (217), Wang Yue died of illness at the age of 41. Cao Pi personally led the scribes to send him a funeral. In order to express his affection for Wang Cang, Cao Pi said to Wang Cang's former friends: "Zhongxuan loves to listen to donkeys on weekdays, let's learn donkey calls once and send him off!" Then a donkey chirped. This is the famous donkey cry funeral.

【The skill of "never forgetting"】

When Wang Cang was young, he had a talented name, a strong sense of knowledge, and a talent that he never forgot, as evidenced by the two small things recorded in the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Shu, and the Biography of Wang Yue.

One day, Wang Cang was walking with a friend and saw an ancient monument on the side of the road, so he stood there and read it aloud. A friend asked him, "Can you recite it?" Wang Yue replied, "Yes." The friend immediately told him to turn around and recite the inscription, and the result was verbatim.

Once, Wang Yue watched others play Go, and someone accidentally messed up the chess pieces, and he said that he could help people put the pieces back in place according to the original situation. The chess player did not believe it, took out a handkerchief and covered it on the chessboard, asking him to change the chessboard and re-swing it, and as a result, there was not even a single error.

【The story of eyebrow loss】

When Wang Cang was in his 20s, he met Zhang Ji, a "medical saint", and he said to Wang Cang: "You are already sick and should be treated as soon as possible." If not, by the age of forty, the eyebrows will fall off. Half a year after the eyebrows fall off, they will die. Now take five stone soup, but also save. But Wang Yue was very unhappy to hear this, did not listen to his words, and did not take medicine. Twenty years later, the eyebrows slowly fell off, and they died half a year after they fell off.
