Explore the "Van Gogh Way" Netherlands belgium in-depth tour (26) - North Brabant Museum
Although many people know that Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, few people have actually visited his hometown, noord-brabant in the southern Netherlands, where Van Gogh was born, went to school, dropped out of school, went to school again, dropped out of school, and dropped out of school until he was 16 years old. Later, after several career blows, when he finally decided to embark on the road of art, he returned to his hometown twice to practice painting.

Although Vincent van Gogh is a painting genius, he is not a smart person, even a little clumsy, but perhaps it is precisely because of this that he can feel with his soul and paint with his life. In the capital of North Brabant, Scheertohenbosch ('s-hertogenbosch), there are some works by Van Gogh from the North Brabant period, which is the only place in the south of the Netherlands where van Gogh's paintings can be seen, although I have seen a lot of his original works in Amsterdam and Van Gogh Forest Park, but since I am in his hometown, I do not want to miss it.
In the Netherlands, except for a few big tourist spots such as Amsterdam, there are almost no people to see, let alone North Brabant, and the most seen along the way are forests and cows. Even in the capital city of Scheertohenbos, there are very few pedestrians on the road.
A small number of people is a good element to see the exhibition, and we went straight to the Het noordbrabants Museum, which houses Van Gogh's paintings.
Although not famous today, Scheertohenbos is one of the earliest established cities in Dutch history, so there are many ancient buildings, and it is said that the museum was converted from a monastery in 1615.
In addition to Van Gogh's works, the museum also houses a large collection of works by brabant-born painters, such as jan sluijters, the Van Spandeck brothers, and some modern exhibitions.
But the first thing I went straight to here was van Gogh's exhibits. At the door of van Gogh's exhibition area is a bust of Van Gogh by the Russian-born French sculptor Ossip Zadkine, which he made in the French town of Orville, where Van Gogh died, following Van Gogh's self-portrait.
Most of these paintings in Van Gogh's exhibition area were created by him in Nuenen, the town we went to in the last article, the peasant woman Godina in "The Potato Eater", the farmer in the farm, the village in Nuenan, and so on. Only 4 of these paintings belong to the North Brabant Museum itself, and the rest are borrowed from the Van Gogh Museum and some other museums, so this area cannot be photographed alone, only the whole, because the Van Gogh Museum is not allowed to take pictures.
Van Gogh had just begun to paint at that time, had not yet come into contact with impressionism, he liked Rembrandt's kind of stage effect of secretly illuminating, and he had witnessed many suffering and starving working people when he was a missionary, and his heart was miserable, so the paintings at that time were very dim. However, what the North Brabant Museum wants to express is not Van Gogh's inner torment and loneliness, but to tell everyone that van Gogh is actually a passionate person, with many strong and lasting friends, although most of them end up because of distance.
The museum has many works by jan sluijters, a local-born Dutch painter known for his passionate expression of color. Throughout his life, he experimented with various styles such as Fauvism and Cubism, and finally established a colorful expressionist style. This painting is a portrait of his third child holding a doll on his birthday, bright colors, dynamic lines, more or less can be seen that he was influenced by many of Van Gogh's later paintings.
Jan Sluijters likes painters, the one on the left is his dad, mom and two sisters, and the one on the right is his wife. Jan Sluijters' talent may have been inherited from his father, who was a wood carver.
Sluijters also frequently went to Paris when he was young, but he remained in the Netherlands after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, so his influence was not too great, and if he had stayed in Paris to develop, perhaps there would have been one more master in the world of painting.
Sluijters painted many of his wives, many naked and muses when he was young, when he was a mother, and although jan sluijters was not so famous internationally, he still had a place among the Dutch middle-class portraitists.
This Portrait of a Three-Dimensional Woman also depicts Sluijters painting his wife, which he painted during the years 1912-1915 when he was exploring Cubism and Futurism.
The museum also features many works by the van Spandeck brothers, Gerard van spaendonck and Cornelis van spaendonck, who were also North Brabant and were born in Tilburg, studied painting in Antwerp, and then went to Paris. The brothers opened up a world of French fashion with their paintings of flowers, and the elder brother Gerald became the court miniature flower painter of King Louis XVI. They were not affected during the French Revolution, and Gerald was awarded the Legionnaire medal by Napoleon in recognition of his achievements. The picture above was painted by my brother in 1791.
This painting was painted by his younger brother Cornelis in 1800. In addition to painting floral still lifes, they also excelled at miniature paintings and botanical prints on snuff bottles, and the brothers' works decorated the salons of many French aristocrats.
The statue of a group of cows in the garden outside the window reminded me of the cows I saw on the road, as a world-famous source of high-quality milk, Dutch dairy products have always been favored by the whole world, and cows really deserve a place.
Another thing that surprised me during this trip to the Netherlands was that the food in the museum was delicious.
