The young emperor Sima Yan of Jincheng: a puppet emperor for a lifetime

author:Interesting history

Sima Yan, the Emperor of Jincheng, was the third emperor of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and was the eldest son of Sima Shao, and the later Emperor Sima Yue of Jin was a half-brother, and their mother was Empress Yu Wenjun of Mingmu. Although Sima Yan, the Emperor of Jincheng, did not live long, Emperor Jincheng was emperor much longer than his father, Emperor Ming of Jin, who reigned between 325 and 342 AD.

When Sima Yan, the emperor of Jincheng, ascended the throne, he was only five years old, because he was too young to manage the government, so the administration of the Eastern Jin Dynasty was handed over to his mother, the then empress dowager, Yu Wenjun to assist the dynasty, and Yu Wenjun died and handed over to the chancellor Wang Dao and his foreign relative Yu Liang to assist the government. During the reign of Sima Yan, the Emperor of Jincheng, Yu Liang, a foreign relative, controlled the government and did whatever he wanted, and wanted to squeeze Out Wang Dao in this way, disintegrate the power in Wang Dao's hands, and restore the prestige and power of the Eastern Jin Dynasty royal family. However, Yu Liang, as a foreign relative, was always suspicious of the chancellor, killed many important officials in the court for his own selfish desires, and ignored Wang Dao's opinions and dissuasion, which eventually led to the outbreak of internal wars in the ruling clique of the feudal dynasty.

In 327 AD, Liyang Taishou SuJun rebelled in the name of killing the traitorous minister Yu Liang, and the Eastern Jin Dynasty was in danger, and at the most critical juncture, Wang Dao once again sent troops to suppress it, and after the pacification of the incident, he once again took charge of the imperial government, and with the assistance of Wang Dao, Sima Yan and the Eastern Jin Dynasty finally turned the crisis into safety. In addition, during the reign of Sima Yan, the Emperor of Jincheng, he once ordered Yu Liang to carry out the Northern Expedition, but failed in the course of fighting Shi Hu. In 336, the Jin Dynasty Emperor issued another edict prohibiting the local tycoon clan from privatizing the mountains and rivers, but the effect was not obvious. In 342, sima yan, the 21-year-old emperor of Jincheng, died.

Sima Yan was also known historically as the Jin Cheng Emperor. Emperor Jincheng reigned for nineteen years, but also conscientious, he ascended the throne at the age of five, died of serious illness in his youth, and the Jin Kang Emperor who succeeded to the throne was not his son, but his younger brother Sima Yue, the king of Langya. And during the reign of Sima Yan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there was a rebellion in Zeng Jia, which is often said in history as the rebellion of Su Jun, so what was the situation of this young emperor Sima Yan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty?

The Eastern Jin Dynasty Sima Yan quelled the rebellion in the second year of Xianhe, that is, in October 327 AD, and Yu Liang, who was also one of his foreign relatives, insisted on not listening to the exhortations and forcibly recruited Su Jun, and ordered Su Jun to rush to the central government to take up the post of Grand Si Nong, hoping to weaken Su Jun's military power. And this move not only did not work, but provoked Su Jun's resistance, so Su Jun chose to burn the jade.

Su Jun immediately joined forces with Shi Zuyue of Yuzhou to rebel and launched a rebellion. The rebellion began in an almost one-sided situation, with the rebel army led by Su Jun breaking through all the way, while Yu Liang was beaten to the point of throwing away his armor and fleeing. Later, Su Jun's self-proclaimed general controlled the government as he wanted, and the chancellor Wang Dao initially protected the still young Emperor Cheng, but later also escaped from the city, and all this rebellion finally ended in the hands of a generation of famous ministers Wen Zhao, under his careful planning, the coalition led by Tao Kan against the rebellious Su Jun was victorious.

Therefore, sima yan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty actually put it more appropriately to say that Wen Yu quelled Su Jun's rebellion, and sima Yan, who was then young and young, only took on the hat of quelling the chaos, in fact, Sima Yan, who was nine years old at the time, did not exert much strength, after all, at that time, he did not even lack the ability to handle the government.

Sima Yan Du Lingyang was a pair of empresses during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Sima Yanshi was called The Jin Cheng Emperor, the third emperor in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, he was only a five-year-old child when he ascended the throne, and the major affairs of the dynasty were taken care of by the empress dowager Yu Wenjun, who was hired in 336 AD, that is, in the second year of Xiankang, to marry Du Lingyang, the daughter of Danyang Du Qi. So what was the relationship between Sima Yan and Du Lingyang and the empress? What folk stories about the empress dowager are circulating?

Because Du Lingyang's family was clear and clear, and she was also very beautiful, Sima Yan ordered her to be made empress. Although Du Lingyang is beautiful but has no teeth, it is said that after marrying Sima Yan, the emperor of Jincheng, she actually grew teeth overnight, in addition to the somewhat legendary story of Du Hou's long teeth, Sima Yan Du Lingyang's six years of marriage were not as loving as outsiders imagined, as long as du Lingyang did not give birth to a dragon in six years, it can be seen that the relationship between them is not too good. Emperor Jincheng was a person who attached great importance to feelings, but when Du Lingyang died, Emperor Jincheng ordered all funeral matters to be done from Jane, and only gave Du Lingyang a nickname, Empress Chenggong.

And about this early death of Empress Chenggong, there is also a legendary story about her death, according to legend, the time when she died of serious illness circulated the news of the death of the weaver girl in the Sanwu area, so the women all wore white flowers for the weaver girl Dai Xiaoxiao, and soon after that Du Lingyang died, so there are also rumors that Du Lingyang was a weaver girl. There are not many historical records of these empresses, and the real Sima Yan Du Lingyang may really be as kind as the empress was described in Qi Tao's article on Du Lingyang's tribute, but what happened in history is unknown to future generations.

Sima Yan is the third emperor of the ancient Eastern Jin Dynasty in China, he reigned for a total of eighteen years, from the age of five to the throne, the JinCheng Emperor Sima Yannian number has been changed three times, in fact, almost every emperor in history will experience the change of year number, such as the Jin Hui Emperor in the Western Jin Dynasty, and even has more than ten year numbers. So what exactly are these three Sima Yannian names?

Sima Yan reigned from 325 AD to 342 AD, and during these eighteen years, Sima Yan used the three era names of Taining, Xianhe, and Xiankang. Among them, the first era name Taining is the era name of Sima Shao, the emperor of the Jin Dynasty, and the first era name of Sima Yan was only used for one year, plus this era name was used by the previous emperor, so it is generally believed in history that Xianhe was sima Yan's first era name.

A year after Sima Yan ascended the throne as emperor, he changed his era name to Xianhe, and Xianhe used this era name for nine years. Sima Yan's last era name, Xian kang, is obviously more widely known, Xian Kang's era name was used for eight years, and when Sima Yan died, he was still using the year name Xian Kang, so this era name was considered by later generations to be a representative of Sima Yan.

Sima Yan did not change the era name at that time because he was still young when he ascended the throne, and did not change the era name to Xianhe until the second year after he ascended the throne, and then changed Xiankang as the second era name until the ninth year, and the Jin Kang Emperor after him also used the era name of Xiankang in the first year of his reign, and did not change the original era name until a year later. Therefore, Sima Yan's era name has a total of three, two of which he changed by himself, and the first is the era name he used.
