After banning traditional cemetery visits last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico restarted the Day of the Dead on October 31, local time. There is an altar in the center of Mexico City dedicated to those who died of COVID-19. Relatives were allowed into a fenced plaza and equipment was provided to print photographs of the dead, which they could then pin to the black wall along with handwritten messages. Mexico has more than 288,000 patients dying from confirmed COVID-19, but the number of people listed on the death certificate who may have died from the coronavirus is close to 440,000.

The Day of the Dead parade is divided into four sections: "Tenochtitlan City – Heart of Mexico", "Mexico City Today", "Magic and Tradition", and "Celebrating Life". "Celebrating Life" is also the slogan of this year's Mexico City Day of the Dead series, which is intended to pay tribute to the frontline medical workers in the fight against the epidemic. Every year, November 1 and 2 is one of the most grand and unique festivals in Mexico. In that year, after the Spanish colonists came to Mexico, they combined the Halloween tradition in the West with the local indigenous customs to create the Day of the Dead. In 2003, UNESCO inscribed the Mexican Day of the Dead as an intangible cultural heritage.

As one of only two states to hold a gubernatorial election in the second year of the presidency, Virginia's gubernatorial election is customarily seen as a weather vane for the midterm elections, which will test voter satisfaction with jobs after Democrats take power. In the 2020 presidential election, Biden led Trump by 10 percentage points in Virginia; but McAuliffe, who is now governor for four years, was overtaken by Yang Jin, a former republican corporate executive. Glenn Youngkin, born in 1966, is a hardcore Trump supporter and CEO of the Carlyle Group, the world's largest private equity fund. Yankin resigned in September 2020, ran for governor in January 2021, and received the Republican nomination in May 2021.

McAuliff led Yankin by 5 percentage points in the mid-August polls, based on poll averages calculated by real clear politics, but in recent days the two candidates have all but reached an impasse. Over the same period, Biden's approval rating fell from about 50 percent to just over 40 percent. Yankin opposed existing COVID-19 regulations, requiring masks and anti-racism education in classrooms in Virginia. As the former CEO of the Carlyle Group (CG.O), he has also promised to take a tough stance on criminals, addressing a package of suburban moderates that observers believe are designed to attract Trump supporters but won't solve.
