A fire broke out in the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan in the early hours of Saturday morning, killing a 7-year-old boy and seriously injuring his grandmother.

According to ABC7, the fire occurred in an apartment building on 178th Street in Washington Heights.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, police reported a fire in the apartment building. The fire began with the apartment of the building administrator, located in the basement, where there were 5 people at the time.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and the fire did not spread elsewhere.

The administrator's grandson, 7-year-old Robert Resto, was pronounced dead on the spot. The boy's 54-year-old grandmother was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Many occupants of the six-story apartment building said they didn't know what was going on. One witness said he just heard the fire trucks coming, starting with one, then a lot of them, surrounding the building. You can smell something like a wire short circuit, burning. When everyone came out, they found that the basement was on fire.

The Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire at the scene.
