Lancetfish, two currently recognized extant species in the genus are: Alepisaurus brevirostris (short-nosed fish) Alepisaurus ferox (proboscis fish). The main difference between the two is the shape of the kissing mouth.
Lancetfish is a species of sail lizard fish found as low as 1830 m (6,000 ft) in the depths of the ocean. The species has a total length of 215 cm (85 inches) and a weight of 9 kg (20 lbs).
It lives in the deep-water oceans of the Western Pacific and Eastern Pacific, from the Aleutian Islands to Chile, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Maine to the Gulf of Mexico, including the Caribbean Sea, as well as the Eastern Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and other seas.

The lancet's mouth is large and its teeth are sharp, indicating that they are predatory. Their watery muscles are not suitable for fast swimming and long pursuits, so they are likely to be ambush predators, using their narrow body contours and silver coloring to disguise their presence.
