Unveiling Taiwan's "Three Northern Islands": Ma Ying-jeou once landed on the island to declare "sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands" on Pengjia Island, Cotton Island and Vase Island

The Straits Herald (reporter Xue Yang @ Taiwan Strait Master Brother Comprehensive Report) A news recently reported by the Japanese media that "the mainland will exercise in the South China Navy in August" has brought the Dongsha Islands to people's attention.

In addition to the familiar Kinma Peng, the outer islands actually controlled by the Taiwan authorities include the Dongsha Islands and Nansha Taiping Island, as well as Pengjia Island, Hua vase Island, Cotton Island, Orchid Island, Green Island, and Xiaoliuqiu Island. Today, Master Brother first introduced Peng JiaYu, Vase Island, and Cotton Island, which are generally called the "Three Northern Islands" by the people of Taiwan.

It is only about 140 kilometers away from the Diaoyu Islands

On April 9, 2016, after the then-Taiwan regional leader Ma Ying-jeou was about to step down, he led a number of officials to peng jiayu on a military plane to inspect peng jiayu and attend the unveiling ceremony of the East China Sea Peace Initiative monument, which was his second visit to Peng jiayu in office.

Pengjiayu, about 56 kilometers away from Keelung Port, also known as Caolai Island and Dazhishan Island, is said to have moved here in the past with a family surnamed Peng to avoid armed fighting, so it was called PengJiayu.

Since Peng Jiayu is currently under military control, the general public in Taiwan cannot land on the island to see its true appearance, and even fewer mainlanders know about the place of "Peng Jiayu."

This mysterious island covers an area of about 114 hectares and has a maximum altitude of 165 meters, which is the only inhabited island in the "Three Northern Islands", and the people stationed on the island come from the Meteorological and Coast Guard units in Taiwan.

Peng Jiayu was short of supplies, and drinking water, food, and other daily necessities were supplied by supply ships every five days.

The island's scenic spots include Guanyin Cave, the Land Temple, the Pengjiayu Lighthouse, and the "Sea Frontier Barrier" stone stele, and the Taiwan authorities have planned to build the "Three Northern Islands" and the surrounding sea areas into marine parks.

Pengjiayu island is only about 140 kilometers away from the Diaoyu Islands, and Chen Shui-bian and Ma Ying-jeou, who were former leaders of the Taiwan region, have all boarded Pengjiayu Island and declared that "the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands belongs to Taiwan."

Off the beaten track, it's a paradise for wildlife

Not far from Pengjia Island, there is a small island called "Cotton Island", with an area of about 0.13 square kilometers, and the highest altitude is only 61 meters. Due to the geographical proximity and similar shape of the two islands, many fishermen mistakenly regard Cotton Island as Pengjia Island.

Cotton Island

The whole island of Cotton Island is covered by volcanic lava, and the hard and porous veins have formed rock bones over the years due to their strong erosion resistance, and the sea caves on the shore have become the special geological landscape of this island.

There is no human habitation on Cotton Island, and the Wanying Temple is the only remaining artificial building, presumably built by fishermen in the early years.

This small island is a paradise for birds, according to the taiwan wild bird protection agency survey, a total of 58 species of birds have been found, including large water birds, terns, Tang egrets and so on. Due to the steep terrain of Cotton Island, fewer people have interfered with the island, so it has preserved a relatively complete natural feature.

There are no garrisons and military facilities on Cotton Island, and after being designated as a protected area, it is currently managed by the Keelung Municipal Government.

The situation of Hua vase Island is similar to that of Cotton Island, because of its steep terrain, the island has always been inaccessible and has been declared a wildlife sanctuary by the Keelung Municipal Government. The island covers an area of about 3.08 hectares, and the highest point is 51 meters above sea level, which belongs to the original volcanic geological feature of the island.
