The following is a lecture given by Wang Li, associate professor of the School of Art Management and Education of the China Academy of Art and head of the Department of Art Management, for the first-year students of the China Academy of Art, with deletions.
Today, I don't want to teach you a lesson as a teacher, but as a senior student who has studied at the China Academy of Art, I will talk about "what is a first year of college" as a senior.
First of all, congratulations on being admitted to the China Academy of Art. The moment you are admitted to the China Academy of Art, whether you are in the first place or the sixtieth place, the gap between your classmates is not very large. The gap between future classmates depends on what you have made in your undergraduate studies and how you have spent your undergraduate studies.
At this moment, you must adjust your mentality as soon as possible to face the broader future. The next four years of college will be one of preparing you for the rest of your life. Undergraduate is about preparing for a lifetime, not for graduation.
What exactly do you want to study at undergraduate level? On the surface, from the first grade to the fourth grade, students study various professional and cultural classes on campus. In fact, the ultimate goal of university learning is the four pillars of education for the 21st century proposed by UNESCO: learning to learn, learning to do things, learning to get along, and learning to be human.
In my teaching work, I have found that some students turn college into secondary school. Some students read the second semester of the third year of college and suddenly reacted: it turns out that college should not be like this. However, it was already a little too late.
College study is very different from secondary school study. In general, the middle school is an indoctrination-style education model, with parents at home, teachers on campus, and even the management of the class teacher can be specific to each student. And college study is not like that. After each professional teacher finishes the class, if you have no problems to ask the teacher, then the teacher will not come to you to take the initiative to find you, let alone stare at you to do homework. Therefore, true university learning requires students to take the initiative to discuss and communicate with teachers. Only in this way can you one day turn your teacher into a friend and a teacher into a peer.
In kindergarten, primary school, and secondary school, it is basically up to parents and schools to make choices for you. So, for first-year students, in the next four years of your college career, you must use your college studies to make yourself a person with independent judgment and a capitalized person with an independent personality.
In the course of four years of college, in addition to taking good professional courses and cultural classes, you have one more important thing to think about, that is, what kind of person you want to become in the future and what your lifelong pursuit is. I believe that the educational purpose of the China Academy of Art is not only to cultivate talents who are useful to society, but also to cultivate talents who influence social artistic ideas and enhance social aesthetic tastes. Therefore, learning professional knowledge and skills is the minimum requirement. And more importantly, you must have a lofty vision and think about how to build a more ideal future for human society through your own discipline learning. For students at the China Academy of Art, we should at least think about what to do for the future of Chinese culture and the future of Chinese art.
The goal of university education is to gradually cultivate students into healthy and well-rounded citizens through the study of various professional knowledge and the training of professional skills. Specifically, it can be summarized into two points: First, there is the ability to be responsible for themselves. Don't go to college graduation and say" "My father wants me to be how, my mother wants me to be", but I have the ability to choose my future life, even if I choose wrong, I also have the ability to bear or correct mistakes. Second, have the ability to be responsible to others. Through the cultivation of study habits at the undergraduate level, the future into the society, once encountering such and such problems, you can find ways to solve them, and actively and responsibly participate in the public life of the country and society.
In addition to studying at the China Academy of Art, what else do you need to think about? I have briefly listed the following points: First, think about what kind of professional path you will embark on in the future. Don't think that if you are admitted to the China Academy of Art, you are already a professional talent; in today's society, the requirements for professional talents are becoming more and more precise and more meticulous, and you must reserve a lot of knowledge for more personalized needs and lay a solid foundation. Second, think about what kind of artists and designers you will become in the future. Your mind should be able to contain the cultural history of the East and the West, the history of art in the East and the West, and the understanding of the current situation of society, to put it more largely, and think about the fate of mankind. In this way, you have the prerequisites for becoming a good talent. Third, think about how we can be closely linked to this era and take it as our duty to develop the country and society. At the China Academy of Art, there are a variety of open lectures that you can freely participate in every year, and listening to the lectures of top scholars from all over the world can broaden your horizons and arouse curiosity, which is also an important source of knowledge and ability for you to reserve the future.
These are the questions you'll have to think about since your freshman year of college. As your college career progresses, you must continue to put it into action to lay a wonderful foreshadowing for your future life.
