Emperor Zhongzong of Tang (656–710), formerly known as Li Zhe, was the fourth emperor of the Tang Dynasty, the seventh son of Li Zhi of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, and the third son of Wu Zetian, reigning twice from 684 to 684 and from 705 to 710. After Li Xian, the crown prince of Zhanghuai, was deposed, he was made crown prince. In the first year of Hongdao (683), the emperor took the throne, and the empress dowager Wu Zetian was in charge of the dynasty. In the first year of Guangzhai (684), he was deposed as the King of Luling and moved to Junzhou and Fangzhou. In the second year of the Holy Calendar (699), Luoyang was recalled and restored as crown prince. In the first year of shenlong (705), the chancellor Zhang Kamzhi and others launched a coup d'état, killing Zhang Yizhi and Zhang Changzong, restoring Emperor Zhongzong to the throne, and deposing Zhou as Tang. After taking the throne, more than 3,000 palace women were released from the palace, and Wu Sansi and others were still reused, and Wu Sansi colluded with Wei Hou to exclude Zhang Kamzhi and others who opposed the Wu clique out of the dynasty. The government was controlled by Empress Webster. In the first year of Jinglong (707), the crown prince Li Chongjun sent troops to jiewu to think twice, and was defeated and killed. During the reign of Emperor Zhongzong, he restored the old system of the Tang Dynasty, waived rent, set up ten inspectors, set up a scholar of the Wenguan, developed economic and cultural exchanges with Tubo, implemented a policy of peace and pro-harmony, and married Princess Jincheng to Tubo Zampu, ensuring the stability of the frontier areas. Emperor Zhongzong of Tang reigned twice, reigning for a total of five and a half years, and in 710 AD, Wei Hou wanted to take over the throne and conspired with Princess Anle to poison Emperor Zhongzong. At the age of 55, he was buried in Dingling with the title of Emperor Daiwa Daisho (初谥孝和皇帝).
