Zhang Ying, born on July 13, 1924 in Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, grew up in a tragic life, her father died early, her mother remarried, and after a few years of private school, she dropped out of school and started a hard job. In 1945, the clever and simple Zhang Ying joined the Cultural and Labor Troupe of the Political Department of the Western Liaoning Military Region, and two years later transferred to the Northeast Cultural and Labor Troupe as an actor.
In 1949, due to her handsome appearance, Zhang Ying was transferred to changchun film studio and became a film actor.
At first, Zhang Ying was unfamiliar with movies, but he was humble and good at learning, so he quickly became competent for his own actor job. The representative works of the 1950s include "Zhao Yiman", "Defending the Country and Protecting the Family", "The White-Haired Girl", "Revolutionary Marriage", "Gate Six", "Shajiadian Grain Station", "Plain Guerrilla", "Dong Cunrui" and so on.

In "Dong Cunrui", Zhang Ying played the image of Zhao Company Commander, the "supreme military commander" of the 6th Company of the 2nd Battalion. Together with Zhang Liang, who played Dong Cunrui, Zhang Ying won the first prize of the Ministry of Culture for Outstanding Actor from 1949 to 1955.

Zhang Ying's most representative role is Luo Jinbao, the reconnaissance platoon leader of the Eighth Route Army in "Little Soldier Zhang Ga". The handsome, intelligent and courageous Luo Jinbao he portrayed, especially those eyes, which were sharp and clean and fascinating, were deeply engraved in the minds of the audience.

Zhang Ying's wife is named Li Huiying, who was an actor in the early days, participated in the filming of "Invisible Front", "Zhao Yiman", "Wind and Flow", "Inside and Outside the Courtroom" and other films, and later became an associate professor at the Beijing Film Academy. After marriage, the couple had two sons and a daughter.
