The positions have been withdrawn and ready to be put on a break, which shows that the 12th Army has been tired from a long battle. Under such circumstances, it is still possible to fight the battle for the late stage of Shangganling, and the combat capability of the army can be seen. So, why did the 12th Army fight and get tired for a long time? Because in the tactical counterattack in the autumn of 1952, the army achieved a lot. Among them, the 100th Regiment of the 34th Division of the army uprooted the nameless heights west of Guandaili, eliminated a stinger wedge of the enemy in front of it into the front of our army, and pushed the front around Guandaili a long distance to the south, greatly improving the defensive posture of our army. Not only that, the 12th Army also emerged in this battle, a special meritorious volunteer soldier who enjoyed a reputation throughout the army, and "first-class demolition hero" Huang Jiafu.

Huang Jiafu, a Chongqing young man who was then the deputy platoon commander of the 1st Battalion and 2nd Company of the 100th Regiment, was only 21 years old at the time and had only 2 years of military experience. Before the battle to capture the unnamed heights west of Guandaili on the night of September 29, he won the "position" of the leader of the demolition team, which was extremely dangerous, and with his 4 members, he was at the front of the battalion's offensive formation, shouldering the heavy responsibility of opening the way for the attacking troops. Because the Korean army stationed on this high ground has turned the highland into a "hedgehog" that spreads through the bunker from the top of the mountain to the foot of the mountain, and even followed the example of the volunteer army and dug a tunnel. Obviously, even if the volunteer support artillery fire was not what it used to be, it would not be possible to destroy the strong fortifications on this position. In the end, it is still necessary to rely on infantry to approach and blast to solve the enemy.
At that time, the Huang Jiafu demolition team did not carry a gun, each person carried several packages of 3 kilograms of explosives, and a circle of domestic wooden handle grenades and Soviet-made anti-tank grenades were wrapped around their waists, each of them weighed more than 20 kilograms, so it was quite inconvenient for the enemy to move in front of him. It was for this reason that when at 18:10 on September 29, when our support artillery began to extend deep into the Rokkaku defense, the demolition team led by Hwang Ka-fu fell into the fire net of the enemy's recovery in the process of receiving the enemy.
Huang Jiafu, who had fallen alone, did not hesitate at all, alertly looking for the fire gap and leaping forward in sections. As he advanced, he kicked an American steel helmet abandoned by the Korean army, and immediately bent down to pick up and buckle it to his military hat. Because he knew that his comrades behind him were wearing cloth hats, this trick might also confuse the Korean army hiding in the shadows. As long as the other party hesitates when aiming at himself, it is enough for him to find favorable terrain to hide himself.
At that time, the Rok army continued to fire flares over the unnamed high ground west of Guandaili. With the bright light of the flares, Hwang Jiafu suddenly found that 2 South Korean soldiers carrying a light machine gun "emerged" from the ground, and then another guy with a carbine "emerged" from the side. Then, using a Soviet-made anti-tank grenade to blast the enemy tunnel entrance open, taking advantage of the fact that the enemy inside was too late to reseal the tunnel entrance, he pulled the fuse of several explosive packs in one go, and pushed the oversized explosive package weighing 24 kilograms into the Shaft-type tunnel of the Rok army with all his might, and then hurriedly rolled to the side.
With a dull explosion coming from under the ground, the entire ground of the highland trembled, and Huang Jiafu was also shocked and fainted on the spot. Afterwards, the prisoners learned that the large explosion carried out by Hwang Ka-fu reimbursed all the personnel and horses of 1 squadron (company headquarters) and 2 squads (platoons) of the ROK army hiding in the tunnel.
After Huang Jiafu woke up, he saw that the fighting in various parts of the highlands was still fierce, and there were only 3 domestic wooden grenades left on his body, so he ignored the pain, walked back along the road, picked up the explosive packs and grenades left by his fallen comrades to re-arm himself, and ran to the position with a smoke.
At this time, the comrades had already captured the ridge of the high ground and were advancing towards the reverse slope attack. The remaining Rok troops are still fiercely resisting. They also followed the example of the US military, and installed 1 tracer bullet every 3 or 4 ordinary rounds on the heavy machine gun ammunition chain, which was actually a double-edged sword: although the tracer ballistic trajectory could indicate the target for its own support firearms, it also exposed the direction of its own fire point.
Hwang Ka-fu followed the ROK army's tracer trajectory, carrying a pile of explosives packs and Soviet-made anti-tank grenades, and quietly touched the top of a trench fortification defending the enemy. The fortification was more than 20 meters long, with a steel rail reinforced earthen and wooden ditch cover on the top, exits at both ends, and several heavy machine gun firing holes were dug in the ditch, and a group of South Korean troops were busy with the fire inside, and there was no time to take care of anything else.
Huang Jiafu pondered that although the explosive pack on his body was enough, if he only fried one end, it was inevitable that the other end would survive alive. He liked to "solve the problem completely", he thought about it, and then quietly climbed to the end of the ditch, pulled several explosive packs and immediately pushed them into the ditch. Although this has a delay of several seconds, there is a possibility that the Korean army in the ditch will find it and throw it out of the ditch. But Huang Jiafu was also stunned, and his body was hit several times by the debris of the crashing fly.
Huang Jiafu, who woke up, briefly bandaged himself with the first aid kit he was carrying, and continued to look for the next target of the explosion. Soon, he found that there was a bunker spewing fire tongues at our army. On the way to this target, Huang Jiafu picked up a sapper shovel discarded by the enemy and tied 5 domestic wooden grenades tightly to the shovel handle. Approaching the bunker, he first threw a grenade, and when he confused the enemy machine gun shooter with the explosion smoke, he quickly rushed forward, put the shovel handle that bound the grenade into the firing hole, and inserted the shovel into the dirt in front of the firing hole. As a result, the Korean troops in the bunker could not push out the smoking cluster grenade for a while. After a loud noise, the machine gun bunker fell completely silent.
Huang Jiafu, who was already empty-handed, had been blasted at close range one after another, causing his eardrums to bleed and temporarily deafening, but he still asked for 2 explosive packs from his comrades-in-arms and continued to look for the next target. Coincidentally, when he approached a large enemy concealment, just twenty or thirty Rok troops retreated down the traffic trench, and Yu Guan hid in this concealment, and no one noticed that Huang Jiafu was waiting on the side. When the last enemy jumped in, Huang Jiafu also pulled the fuse and threw 2 explosive packs in together. In this way, the hidden ministry became another collective tomb of the Korean army.
After the war, the 100th Regiment of the 34th Division of the 12th Army of the Volunteer Army repeatedly verified the results of the battle, and confirmed that Huang Jiafu had been stunned three times during the entire night of fighting, and successively blew up 1 enemy tunnel, 2 ditches, 2 hidden units, 10 various bunkers and shooting fortifications, and killed more than 200 ROK troops in total. The relevant materials were reported, and the headquarters of the Volunteer Army gave Huang Jiafu a special meritorious service and awarded him the honorary titles of "First-Class Demolition Hero" and "Model Regiment Member". The North Korean side awarded him the "First Class Warrior" medal.
In 1953, Huang Jiafu's name was written by Peng Dehuai, commander and political commissar of the Volunteer Army, into the heroic model spectrum listed in the "Report of the Volunteer Army on the Work of Resisting US Aggression and Aiding Korea", ranking fourth after Yang Gensi, Huang Jiguang, and Guo Zhongtian.
Fortunately, Huang Jiafu survived the subsequent Battle of Shangganling and died in 2011 at the age of 80.
