On the occasion of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of Heshun Library, in order to show the foresight of the cultural enlightenment of the sages and the avant-garde consciousness of overseas Chinese, we spent half a year collecting manuscripts from domestic scholars, overseas Chinese and local villagers, and published "Cultural Memory of Overseas Chinese - Commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of the Establishment of Tengchong heshun Library in Yunnan". In the process of editing the book, we made appropriate abridgements to some of the manuscripts, and some of them were modified by the authors themselves. Due to the rush of time, it is inevitable that there will be incompleteness, and I sincerely hope that everyone will criticize and correct it.
It should be noted that this commemorative collection of essays has brought together the painstaking efforts of many compilers, who have received strong support and enthusiastic help from editor to publication, and I would like to express our gratitude here.
——Heshun Librarian Tsutomu
Heshun, four generations of a lasting love
Yang Xiaodong
Whether a village is beautiful or not, it is not only about her architecture, but also about her "connotation". And what kind of readers and libraries (rooms) a village has undoubtedly reveals the taste of this village.
It is such a sweet and quiet village that connects my family and launches a century-old lasting love.
In 1909, Peng Jizhi was transferred to the prefect of Yongchang, he went south from Lijiang, brought Zhao Shiming, the editor-in-chief of Lijiang Vernacular Newspaper, to Baoshan, and founded "Yongchang Vernacular Newspaper", which was bound into a book once a month, distributed in the military, political, commercial and academic circles, and was the originator of Baoshan newspaper. At that time, the British consul in Tengyue, C. Archibald W. Rose, was gathering intelligence for the British expedition to Katama, and the situation was in crisis. Zhao Shiming clarified in the "Yongchang Vernacular Newspaper" that Britain has the intention of being ready to invade Yunnan at any time, and called on compatriots to wake up and put into practice the significance of the measures of rich countries and strong soldiers.
When Zhao Shiming was running a newspaper in Baoshan, he received a letter from his teacher Zhao Fan, informing him that he had time to go to Tengyue, which was a land of mountains and rivers, and he also knew a manager of the "Yunnan" magazine of the Japan Study Abroad Office, named Li Gengen. In 1907, Zhao Fan was remitted to Shanghai through the Chongqing Xiang number and forwarded to the Japanese Hometown Association for the use of Yunnan magazine. Li Gen is a native of Tengyue. Zhao Shiming became acquainted with Tengyue from then on, and then met Li Gengen, traveled together in Tengyue, improvised poems, and survived in the "Yongchang Fu Wenzheng" hundred poems. Zhao Shiming also visited the poetry during his visit to the Heshun Library, enjoying the pleasure of sweeping the back of the book with his fingertips, admiring the cover binding of the line-bound book, and completing a wonderful and comfortable book-scented journey in the library filled with the fragrance of books. All of this makes it savory.
Zhao Shiming later went to Kunming to participate in the founding of yunnan daily, and in 1939, he served as the curator of the Yunnan Tongzhi Museum, and compiled the "New Yunnan Tongzhi" with Zhou Zhongyue. Later generations praised Zhao Fan's most proud students: Zhao Shiming, Zhou Zhongyue, and Li Gensanjie.
Zhao Shiming is the grandfather of my great aunt Zhao Ling. In October 1944, after the restoration of Tengchong, it was urgent to restore the school, recruit teachers, and cultivate talents for post-war reconstruction, and my grandfather Yang Xiang was hired by Tengchong Township School in this historical background, from Dali Jianchuan to Tengchong to teach. During the busy holidays, he traveled through the beautiful landscapes, scenic spots, and humanistic society of Tengchong. Heshun Library once admired him, he often in front of the window, casually took a book, sat leisurely, enjoyed the pleasure of reading. He believes that the reason why a rural library is attractive is that in addition to the library itself, it is inseparable from the men and women in the library, and he is very envious of their ability to work and live happily in the company of books.
In early 1950, Yang Xiang had returned to his hometown, and his eldest son Yang Su came to Tengchong again to serve as the second secretary of the Tengchong County CPC Committee.
Yang Suyuan was a member of the Yunnan Underground Party of the Communist Party of China and the Northwest Yunnan Working Committee, and the political commissar of the Seventh Detachment of the Border Column. On the eve of liberation, he lurked in Longling Xiangda Xiaodong Middle School, where he and Kuang Peixing were responsible for organizing underground armed forces and cooperating with the westward troops to liberate Longling. In December 1949, yunnan was peacefully liberated, and Yang Su was responsible for accepting the Longling regime and served as the secretary of the Longling County Working Committee of the Communist Party of China. At that time, Tengchong County had a special situation, and it was necessary to unite overseas Chinese leaders, local cultural celebrities, and frontier ethnic minority toastmasters, and urgently needed a leader with a high level of education and rich experience in united front work to assist in the work. Yang Su was transferred to Tengchong by the CPC Baoshan Mountain Committee.
When Yang Su was working in Tengchong, he had the habit of walking after dinner, and once he walked into the cemetery of the national martyrs and found that there were peasant children herding pigs inside. After returning to the county party committee, he explained to the person in charge of the office that the cemetery of the national martyrdom was the perch of the heroic anti-Japanese spirits, not the place where cattle and pigs were herded, and it was necessary to find a way to protect the cemetery of the national martyrdom.
Yang Su was tutored by Zhao Shiming and Yang Xiangzeng since childhood, and is a typical book fan. Later, when he studied at Heqing Normal School and Kunming Jianmin Middle School, he was also a well-known chinese literary bully. When he went to the countryside and came to the Heshun Library, he was deeply attracted by the books in front of him. When the watchman of the Heshun Library introduced him, he did not feel a little strange, only when it was a reunion of old friends, and it was like a revisit. Heshun's first smile gave him the feeling of being at home. Because this kind of smile is not a trained head action, but a greeting from the heart of the reader.
On the way back from Heshun, he was pondering a question: Why is the Heshun Library still well preserved after several wars in Tengchong?
After working in Tengchong for 2 years, Yang Su was transferred to the Propaganda Department of the Dehong Prefecture Party Committee, went deep into the ethnic minority villages of Santai Mountain in Mangshi City to experience life, and wrote the novel "The Unwoven Tube Skirt", which was published in "People's Literature", which attracted the attention of Predecessors such as Bingxin, Contradiction, and Mara Xinfu, and entered the road of literary creation. He has published film and literary scripts "Jingpo Girl" (filmed by Bayi Film Factory), "Biography of Zhou Baozhong", "Biography of Aisqi", "Ode to Youth", "Tibetan Flying Horse", "Lisu People's Home", of which the novel "Provincial Party Committee Compound" is his masterpiece after the age of 70. He won the Chinese National Literature Horse Award and is one of the famous ethnic minority writers in China.
Yang Su was my father's eldest brother, and my great uncle later married Zhao Ling, the granddaughter of Zhao Shiming. The two are 92 years old this year, and now Kunming is enjoying his old age.
The cloudless Tengchong and Heshun are still in love with me for a long time. Because of books, I have been copying my own library, constantly buying books and reading. Over time, the four walls of the home have been book walls, nearly 30,000 miscellaneous books, and another set of hardcover "Four Libraries Complete Book" purchased in Shanghai Heritage Bookstore in 2003, a total of 1500 volumes, which was purchased for 300,000 yuan at that time, stored in the living room of the Qianli Building of Jiulong Famous Residence. In 2012, the family immigrated to New Zealand, and they were always worried about the storage of this set of books. Baoshan local colleges and libraries are also looking for someone to show their appreciation, looking forward to collecting. I thought about it for 3 years.
In 2016, Mr. Li Deyun of the township party informed Mr. Cun Shiqing, deputy director of the Baoshan Municipal People's Congress, that I would like to donate the "Four Libraries of the Whole Book" to the Heshun Library, and asked the director of the Cunyu Library to bring someone to Baoshan's home to sort out the boxes and transport them back to the Collection of heshun Library.
Afterwards, a friend asked me: Why did you choose Heshun Library? I replied: I am an overseas Chinese, isn't it also very appropriate to donate to overseas Chinese?
My family's love affair with the readers and libraries on the other side of the mountain has been four generations for a hundred years, why the context is constant, lingering. I stood by the heshun wind and rain pavilion, thinking about the past years, a village she has its own direction, her direction is the flow of the whole village, and the flow of people in the village is the library, and finally the direction of history.
