Japan's national comic "Lupin III" will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, and the author Monkey Punch will also celebrate his 80th birthday in May. Recently, Monkey Punch was interviewed by a number of media outlets, revealing many interesting stories from his creative career and the behind-the-scenes story of "Lupin III".

It has been 50 years since the birth of Lupin III. Why has the work always been loved by everyone? The author himself can't figure it out. However, Monkey Punch said that the only thing he could say was probably "easy to understand". The setting of five characters can give birth to interesting story unfolding. Each time, the monster thieves used different techniques to try to seize the treasure, but in the end, there was a reversal. Because the beginning and end of the story can be fully functioned, the reader will not get bored. Monkey Punch believes that this may be the reason why the work has been popular for 50 years.

Monkey Punch has been a great fan of drawing manga since he was a child, and before his debut, he most admired the late Mr. Osamu Tezuka. Once, he once came across the manga god at a sake brewery in Akasaka, Tokyo. At that time, Mr. Tezuka said to him, "It is not enough to paint Lupin III, you have to paint all kinds of things." ”

Mr. Tezuka's words deeply touched Monkey Punch. However, the editor-in-chief of Shimizu, whom he respected, said to him: "Such a role cannot be easily born." Just go on and paint Lupin. ”

Monkey Punch believes that the reason why the two people have opposite opinions is because the writer and the editor have different positions. Should I paint Lupin for the rest of my life? Sometimes, he also wants to paint other works. The words of these two were really too heavy for him, and he still hadn't found his own answer.

So, for Monkey Punch, what exactly is Lupin III, which has been with him for 50 years? The teacher smiled and said, "This answer is very simple, it is a 'toy'. Not a 'playmate', but a 'toy'. I was the only one who could play with Lupin III. I can set it up as I please, and let the characters go on all sorts of adventures. It can be said that I can do whatever I want. This is my 'toy'. ”

This toy, which Was unique to Him in The Eye Punch, began to gain popularity throughout Japan through the first TV anime that began airing in 1971. By Part 2 of 1977, the popularity of the work had been shaken. In addition, "Lupin III" has also released animated films, and since 1989, it has been broadcast on television almost every year. It can be said that Lupin is now a "national hero" that everyone will recognize.

Monkey Punch said that the animation creators of each era, with their own new ideas, produced a variety of Lupin III. The sensibility of these creators is also closely related to the generational changes of the audience, which is why it will bring such success.

For example, in Miyazaki's first feature-length animated film, Lupin III, The Castle of Cario stró, appeared in Miyazaki Ryu's Lupin. That is, different supervisors will make their own Lupin. I think the audience may have resonated with it as well. ”

Perhaps because of this, Monkey Punch adheres to non-interventionism when it comes to animation. He hopes to be able to be an audience member to expect how Lupin will be seasoned by animation. So, even if the animator sends the script, he won't read it.

Seeing the Daily News photojournalist's SLR camera, Monkey Punch asked with interest about the model of the reporter's camera. The teacher loves to fiddle with the machine and used to assemble his own radio as a child. In 1975, the teacher saw the computer for the first time at a friend's house in the United States, asked the friend what kind of machine it was, and then bought it directly in the United States and brought it back to Japan. At that time, the computer cost more than half a million yen. In 1988, Monkey Punch began drawing on computers. He has a Mac in his studio, and as soon as he turns it on, colorful works appear.

At first, Monkey Punch thought that "there are better paintings, and more interesting drawings" and began to draw with the computer. After painting for a long time, he wanted to go deeper and deeper. In 2003, at the age of 66, Monkey Punch came to the graduate school of Japan University of Technology and began to learn computer painting. "I thought about the future comics ignoring digitization, and I'm not an expert, so I want to hear from all kinds of people," he said. "The desire to improve the level of the work is not endless.

After completing his studies, Monkey Punch transformed himself into a university pulpit. He said to the students, "You have to absorb all kinds of things, because you don't know what will help the work." For example, music has its own story. ”

In Monkey Punch's studio, there are also sound machines. The jazz that flows in the sound and the rhythm of Lupin III's work also complement each other. The teacher also has in-depth research on sound, and even has a room in his home dedicated to enjoying music. He laughed and said: "The sound and the painting are the same, you can't move if you don't see it with your own eyes and listen to it with your own ears." So, if someone says, 'This sounds good,' I want to actually listen to it. If there is a favorite cartoonist, whether he is in the United States or Europe, he will leave to visit him. ”

"Right now, I'm focused on this." As he spoke, the teacher turned his gaze to the VR game console in front of the big TV, "I want to try to make Lupin with VR." No, absolutely. He asserted.

As soon as you are interested, you can flexibly engage in it, and put it into practice no matter what you want. Lupin's brisk sense of speed and challenge are the same as the author's style.
