British composer Nigel Hess has written hundreds of pieces for stage and screen, but it was his 2004 music for Charles Dans' film Waiting for Love that really won the hearts of listeners. Starring Judy Dench and Maggie Smith, the film takes place in picturesque Cornwall in the 1930s. This majestic, poetic music blends in perfectly with breathtaking views and ocean views.

As the main melody, Hess let a full symphony orchestra come solo for the violin. It's nothing new to have the violin as the protagonist of a movie soundtrack, think of the memorable music that John Williams did for Schindler's List, or Shostakovich's Love of the Bullfly, but here it also works really well. With its indulgent, sad voice and heartstring tunes, this piece is reminiscent of that romantic era. The score also contains violin and orchestral stand-alone fantasies, with Hess reversing the main melody and reinterpreting it in minor keys.
