On September 17, this Shakespearean classic will be performed at the Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Center. How does the Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Center and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre work together to present a "Twelfth Night" that meets the "Chinese Environment"? The Shakespeare Stage Translation Project was launched by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2015 to create a Chinese shakespeare translation that is suitable for stage rehearsal, easy for actors to interpret, and easy for audiences to appreciate. Unlike previous Shakespeare translations, which focused on "literary nature", the new text of the translation plan emphasizes the importance of its "stage language". As a theatrical script, the translation language of the translation plan should fully reflect the diversity of Shakespeare's text, but at the same time, as a line, it should make the Chinese actors feel comfortable, fluent and catchy. At the same time, the translation should also give contemporary young audiences a sense of identity, rather than rejecting people thousands of miles away.
At present, the "Shakespeare Stage Translation Project" has cooperated with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center to perform "Henry V", "King Lear" and "The Tempest" with the National Centre for the Performing Arts of China, and "Hamlet" and many other works with the Beijing Li Liuyi Drama Studio.
