Dong Bangda's main painting activity was during the Qianlong period. The Qianlong Emperor Hongli compared it to Li Shizuo to the painters Dong Yuan and Li Cheng of the Five Dynasties and northern Song Dynasty, and Ruan Yuan once called his landscape painting method "the first hand of the national dynasty" and "three Dong Xiangcheng". Dong Bangda has a large number of paintings circulating, most of which are hidden in Qingnei Province, and recorded in the "Stone Canal Baodi". Ruan Yuan said when he was studying the "Shiqu Baodi": "The number of WenKe paintings seen is five hundred, and there is no beauty or perfection, and it is impossible not to prepare." ”
At present, there are nearly 500 paintings of Dong Bangda that are found in various literature, including 47 works with clear chronology, and 86 works that can be inferred from the time when Dong Bangda was created (at least before the inscription) by examining the time of the Inscription of the Qianlong Emperor and others. Dong Bangda's paintings are mainly ink landscapes, and the colored landscapes like to use the "light method", and the green colored landscapes are less popular.
From the perspective of the subject matter of the works, his works can be roughly divided into five types: antique landscape painting, poetic painting, lyrical landscape painting, court landscape painting, and snow landscape painting.
