Yancheng, a prefecture-level city in Jiangsu Province, is located in the eastern coastal region of China, the central part of Jiangsu Province, and the northern wing of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. Yancheng is bordered by the Yellow Sea to the east, Nantong to the south, Yangzhou and Taizhou to the southwest, Huai'an to the northwest, and Guanhe river and Lianyungang City to the north. The city's terrain is flat and its canals run wide. Yancheng administers 3 districts, 5 counties and 1 city, with a total land area of 16,931 square kilometers, of which 4,553 square kilometers are along the beach, and the registered population in 2018 is 8,261,500.

In the fourth year of the Reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (119 BC), the imperial court set aside a part of the eastern part of Gusheyang County near the Yellow Sea to set up a separate county, because it was full of boiling salt pavilions and salt rivers carrying salt, so it was called Yandu County. At that time, there was no rule in the county, and it was managed by Sheyang Cheng (present-day Baoying County).

During the Three Kingdoms period, Cao Cao ordered Jianghuai to move west and abolish Yandu County.

In the seventh year (411) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Yandu was renamed Yancheng because of the "salt field around the city".

During the Northern Qi Dynasty, Sheyang Commandery was established in Yancheng, and Chen Shi was changed to Yancheng County.

In the last year of the Sui Dynasty, Wei Che, the leader of the Jianghuai peasant rebel army, called Wang Li Shezhou according to Yancheng, and was divided into three counties: Sheyang, Xin'an, and Anle.

At the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, Yancheng County was abolished, and It belonged to Chu Prefecture; in the first year of the Qianyuan Dynasty (758), Yancheng was placed in charge of the salt affairs of Chu Prefecture. During the Song Dynasty, Yancheng belonged to Chu Prefecture.

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhang Shicheng led the Yanmin Rebellion and established the Great Zhou regime, which lasted for 14 years, and was an important force that shocked and disintegrated the corrupt rule of the Yuan Dynasty, and finally claimed the title of King of Wu at Pingjiang (present-day Suzhou). In the Ming Dynasty, Yancheng belonged to Nanjing (South Zhili) Huai'an Province, Yangzhou Prefecture; Zhu Yuanzhang "Hongwu Rush Dispersion" (ancient name "Red Turban Dispersion"), Suzhou, Songjiang, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Hangzhou and other places more than 4,000 fieldless peasant households moved to Jiangbei, some settled in Yancheng.

At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, it first belonged to Jiangnan Province, and then to Jiangsu Province. In the ninth year of Qing Yongzheng (1731), Funing County was established. In the thirty-third year of Qianlong (1768), Dongtai County was established.

During the Republic of China, during the Republic of China, it first belonged to Huaiyang Province, and then abolished the province, and successively set up the Tenth Administrative Supervision District of Jiangsu Province, the Administrative Supervision District of Yancheng Of Jiangsu Province, and the Sixth Administrative Supervision District of Jiangsu Province, stationed in Yancheng County, with jurisdiction over 4 counties of Yancheng, Dongtai, Xinghua and Funing.

In October of the 29th year of the Republic of China (1940), the New Fourth Army, which was moving east to the north, and the Eighth Route Army in the south met at Baiju Lion's Mouth division and established the Central China General Headquarters. After the Anhui Incident, the New Fourth Army rebuilt its military headquarters in Yancheng. In September of the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941), the Yanfu District Administrative Office was established. It has jurisdiction over 7 counties of Yancheng, Yandong, Jianyang, Funing, Fudong, Huai'an and Lianshui and Lianguan Fubian District Office. In the following year, Lianguan Fubian District was reorganized into Sheyang and Binhai Counties. At the end of October of the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), Yancheng was liberated.

On April 21, 1949, Yancheng Special District administered Yancheng, Sheyang (composed of parts east of the former Funing and Yancheng Kudanhe River and south of the Sheyang River, and the county people's government was stationed in Hede Town), Jianyang (composed of the areas west of the former Funing and Yancheng Kudan river and north of the Picha River, and the county people's government was stationed in Huduo Town), Funing, Huai'an, Binhai (composed of parts of the former Funing, Lianshui, and Guanyun counties, and the county people's government was stationed in Dongkan Town), Liandong (part of the area east of the former Lianshui Salt River). The county people's government is stationed in DachengJi) 7 counties. The Commissioner's Office is located in Yancheng Town.

On January 11, 1950, the two counties of Dongtai and Taipei, formerly taizhou special district, were transferred to Yancheng special district. In the same year, Liandong County was abolished and merged into Lianshui County in Huaiyin Prefecture.

On July 11, 1951, Taipei County was renamed Dafeng County, and Jianyang County was renamed Jianhu County. Yancheng Special District has jurisdiction over 8 counties.

On January 1, 1953, the People's Government of Jiangsu Province was established and set up as Yancheng Special District. Yancheng Special District administers 8 counties of Yancheng, Huai'an, Binhai, Funing, Sheyang, Jianhu, Dafeng and Dongtai. In 1954, Huai'an County was assigned to Huaiyin Prefecture. Yancheng Special District has jurisdiction over 7 counties.

In 1966, Xiangshui County (stationed in Xiangshui Town) was established in the area north of zhongshan river in Binhai County. Yancheng Special District has jurisdiction over 8 counties.

In 1970, Yancheng Special District was renamed Yancheng District, which has jurisdiction over 8 counties of Yancheng, Xiangshui, Binhai, Funing, Sheyang, Jianhu, Dafeng and Dongtai.

In 1983, Yancheng District and Yancheng County were abolished and Yancheng City was established under the jurisdiction of the province. [1]
