In January 1939, the advancing column attacked Yangzhong again.

The troops made relatively adequate pre-war preparations, and after finding out the deployment of jia changfu's security regiment, decided to take a surprise attack and solve him in one night.

Guan Wenwei lent the Kuomintang a reason to paralyze the enemy, and then seized Yangzhong, so angry that Han Deloitte slapped the table and scolded the first, attacked Yangzhong No. 2 again, and insisted on advancing north

The troops sent one detachment to accomplish this task, with two battalions of the second detachment cooperating. One detachment surrounded the enemy stationed in Laolang Street in central Yangzhong with one battalion, one battalion solved the enemy at Baziqiao and the small bandits in the countryside; two battalions of the second detachment and one battalion of the detachment solved the stubborn Kuomintang county government in Sanmao Town and jia Changfu's regimental headquarters. The battle plan ended before dawn, and during the day the small remnants of the enemy in the countryside were cleared.

After the deployment was completed, the various units set out separately to carry out the battle plan that night. After a night of lightning-fast action, the commanders and fighters of our army took most of the enemy out of their nests. According to statistics after dawn, there were more than two battalions of the total annihilation of the recalcitrant army, and a small number of enemies fled to the countryside, and then they were gradually cleared out. The Kuomintang county magistrates and county party committee members fled to Jiangbei. I have explained to the troops in advance that they should skip the trial and not be arrested, because it is not easy to deal with them.

At the same time, Comrades Mei Jiasheng and Wei Yongyi led three, four, and two detachments across the Yangtze River and controlled the area around the hissing horses and bridges that originally belonged to Han Deloitte in the north of the river, connecting them with Yangzhong.

This annoyed Han Deloitte, a diehard Kuomintang faction. He immediately ordered Li Mingyang, Li Changjiang, Zhang Shaohua, Zhang Xingbing, and others to "crusade" into the column, retake the areas occupied by our army in Yangzhong and Yangtze and Taiyanjiang within a time limit, and posted a notice offering a reward for arrest: "Guan Wenwei was caught and rewarded with 50,000 yuan." But they are full of internal contradictions and look at each other. The troops on the Erli side had already done their work, and if they did not move, the other units would not dare to act rashly. Since then, the troops have gained a foothold in Yangzhong.

Han Deqin also asked Gu Zhutong and Leng Xin to exert pressure on the New Fourth Army Headquarters, shouting: "Guan Wenwei's troops are illegal and sabotage the War of Resistance, and they must be investigated and held accountable." "The New Fourth Army headquarters should order Chen Yi to withdraw the advancing column from Yangzhong within a time limit." Otherwise, join the crusade. And so on.

Under pressure, the leaders of the military department consulted with Comrade Chen Yi: Should Guan Wenwei's troops be withdrawn? Comrade Chen Yi disagreed, he believed that the fight had already been fought, how to withdraw the law? You can say that although we have incorporated a local unit, we cannot control it.

Later, Comrade Xiang Ying adopted Comrade Chen Yi's opinion and replied to Gu Zhutong: Guan Wenwei is a local armed force, and although it is incorporated, the whip is beyond reach and the command is not moving. Cleverly pushed back the unreasonable demands of the recalcitrant army.

About half a month or so after the defeat of Yangzhong, Comrade Chen Yi came to Yangzhong Laolang Street to advance into the column headquarters. He praised YangZhong and said: "This place is really beautiful, full of bamboo forests, reeds, fighting, recuperation is good." ”

He inspected Yangzhong for a week and gave more specific instructions on Yangzhong's work, stressing that people from all walks of life in Yangzhong should be absorbed into the political departments, and they must not be excluded from the door, let alone let them flee to northern Jiangsu. He emphatically said: "This point will have a great impact on our future work of winning over people from all walks of life in northern Jiangsu, and we must not be careless." You're going to do the work yourself. In accordance with Comrade Chen Yi's opinion, we carried out united front work in Yangzhong and won Wang Xing, a member of the Kuomintang's county party department, and Zuo Daocheng, a capitalist, to the side of the anti-Japanese camp, and later had a positive impact on the Progressive Kuomintang people in northern Jiangsu.

He also explained that there are particularly many small and medium-sized merchants and peddlers in Yangyang, and there are also many single gangs, and they travel between Shanghai and northern Jiangsu, and they must also do a good job of these people's work, and should not arbitrarily charge others with adultery, or even arrest them. Of course, there may be a few bad guys who use the running gang to carry out traitorous or spy activities, after all, this is a minority, don't be afraid. Except where there is conclusive evidence, ordinary suspects must not be arrested or even unjustly killed. If that were the case, it would be bad for us.

2, insist on moving north

During this period, Comrade Chen Yi has been considering and planning two major events, one is the northward advance of the New Fourth Army, how to open up the anti-Japanese base area in northern Jiangsu, and the other is the relocation of the military headquarters. On these two matters concerning the overall situation, he and Comrade Xiang Ying waged repeated and arduous struggles with their right-leaning opportunist ideas.

At the beginning of October of that year, Comrade Chen Yi returned from inspecting the work in the Cheng, Xi, and Yu areas, arrived at Yao Jiadai, the garrison of the Advancing Column, and had a long all-night talk with Guan Wenwei.

Guan Wenwei lent the Kuomintang a reason to paralyze the enemy, and then seized Yangzhong, so angry that Han Deloitte slapped the table and scolded the first, attacked Yangzhong No. 2 again, and insisted on advancing north

He first talked about the situation in the areas of Cheng, Xi, and Yu, and told Guan Wenwei that the anti-communist and diehard forces in those places were still quite large, and the social foundation of the Kuomintang was relatively strong. Originally, the vast countryside from the east of Changzhou to the seaside could be occupied by all of them. Due to Xiang Ying's hesitation, Ye Fei's troops advanced and retreated eastward, and the vast villages of Cheng, Xi, Yu, Su, Kun, Chang, and Tai were all occupied by the Kuomintang loyal national salvation army. In May this year, Ye Fei and Wu Xian led their troops to the east, and along the way they had to fight continuously with the Kuomintang troops. There, our army eliminated many loyal national salvation troops, improved their equipment, and expanded their political influence, but the sacrifices were also great. Comrade Hu Fajian, chief of staff of a detachment, was assassinated by Mei Guangdi's subordinates near Luoyang in Wujin Nanxiang, and Comrade Wu Kun, deputy commander of the Sixth Regiment, was also killed by an attack by the anti-communist army near Gushan Town in Jiangyin. Leng Xin in the south and Han Deloitte in the north both vigorously supported the local anti-communist forces there, coupled with the continuous "sweeping" of the Japanese army, yebu fought on both sides, and the difficulties were indeed greater. Moreover, the troops must constantly fight against the recalcitrant army, cannot disperse themselves to do mass work, and it is far from enough to rely solely on sending down a few comrades. Therefore, the leaves are in urgent need of rest.

Guan Wenwei lent the Kuomintang a reason to paralyze the enemy, and then seized Yangzhong, so angry that Han Deloitte slapped the table and scolded the first, attacked Yangzhong No. 2 again, and insisted on advancing north

Comrade Chen Yi went on to say that he had made a special trip to Jiangyin during this trip to Cheng, Xi, and Yu. At that time, Ye Fei's troops were stationed in the Area of Zhouzhuang in Jiangyin, and Yuan Acheng's troops of the Kuomintang Loyal Andi National Salvation Army were stationed in the Zhutang area southeast of Zhouzhuang in an attempt to block the way of our eastward troops. Our army could not bear it any longer and was ready to defeat Yuan Acheng, the roadblock. After hearing the news, the Military Department and Comrade Chen Yi did not agree. Comrade Xiang Ying was worried that a single fight would undermine the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communists; Comrade Chen Yi was thinking about the other side, in which the enemy placed the "sweeping" troops on the Shanghai-Nanjing line and looked everywhere for the whereabouts of our army. As soon as the battle breaks out, our eastward troops will all be exposed to the enemy, and the enemy may immediately dispatch from Zhenjiang, Changzhou, and Suzhou to jointly encircle and suppress them. The enemy of Zhenjiang will come from the east to occupy the Menghe and Xiaohe rivers northwest of Wujin, cutting off our way back to the west, the enemy of Changzhou will advance from the West Stone Bridge to the east, while the enemy of Suzhou will attack from the west, and the enemy navy will also send out to block the river. In this way, our army has no way forward and no way back, resulting in a dangerous situation in which praying mantises catch cicadas and yellow finches are in the back. Comrade Chen Yi rushed to Jiangyin and persuaded the troops to abandon their original plan. He said to Guan Wenwei: "Our army is fighting behind enemy lines and must not expose ourselves. Otherwise, it is easy to be surrounded by enemies and fall into a heavy siege. Whoever falls under siege will suffer losses. Listening to Comrade Chen Yi's conversation, I deeply felt that the problem of combat strength behind enemy lines to avoid falling into a heavy siege is really a very profound issue of tactical principles, and those who lead the troops cannot but think deeply.

Then, Comrade Chen Yi talked to Guan Wenwei again about the issue of moving north. He believed that in this narrow strip of land in Jiangnan, there were many rivers and lakes, many enemy strongholds, many blockade lines, and very little room for maneuver for the operation of the large corps. In addition, the diehard Leng Xin was heavily fortified along the mountains along the Border Region of Suzhou, Zhejiang, and Anhui, and there were several divisions stationed near the military headquarters, and there was a danger of separating us from the front and back at any time. To the north, a large river blocked the way, forcing us to fight the enemy every day and fight and consume every day. Over time, we will be wiped out. This was Chiang Kai-shek's plan to kill people with a knife.

He asked Guan Wenwei: "In this case, you see what we should do." ”

Guan Wenwei said, "Didn't you say in the past that you would go north?" You have appreciated Zhu Yuan's opinion of going north, and the central authorities have the 'Five·Four' instruction, and the spirit is clearly explained. In my opinion, we secretly crossed the river to the north and looked for an opportunity to eat Han Deloitte bite by bite. ”

Guan Wenwei lent the Kuomintang a reason to paralyze the enemy, and then seized Yangzhong, so angry that Han Deloitte slapped the table and scolded the first, attacked Yangzhong No. 2 again, and insisted on advancing north

Comrade Chen Yi nodded and said, "The situation is obvious, but some people oppose this." I have argued with them many times and have not been resolved. Xiang Ying said: Our army does not have the conditions for developing to the north in terms of numbers and weapons and equipment, and even if it has the conditions, it cannot do so. If this is done, the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party may break down, which will not be conducive to the War of Resistance. Therefore, they regard the northward advance as a 'rough and reckless' and 'adventurous'. It's a mess. Comrade Chen Yi said indignantly: "In fact, they stubbornly carry out the line of right opportunism, pin their hopes for the War of Resistance on the Kuomintang, and dare not take a step out of the small circle of the Kuomintang."

However, the obstruction of Comrade Xiang Ying and other comrades could not shake Comrade Chen Yi's determination. He told Guan Wenwei: When Comrade Zhou Enlai was in the military department in February, he conveyed the central authorities' policy that our army should "consolidate southern Jiangsu and develop to the north," and fully supported his opinion, saying that this plan is good and achievable, and that it is enough to pay attention to the deployment and the mode of activities. Comrade Chen Yi asked me to send someone to the Tong, Ru, and Hai areas to find out the situation there, saying that sooner or later we would have to go. He said: "However, if we cross the river, we will not be able to eat Han Deloitte slowly and gradually, as you said." In fact, as soon as our large army crosses the river, Han Deloitte will immediately pounce with all his might and drive us back to Jiangnan; this is a matter of decisive battle, and to fight a big battle is by no means a matter of eating slowly. In the future, the development of the situation in northern Jiangsu is completely in line with Comrade Chen Yi's estimation.

Guan Wenwei lent the Kuomintang a reason to paralyze the enemy, and then seized Yangzhong, so angry that Han Deloitte slapped the table and scolded the first, attacked Yangzhong No. 2 again, and insisted on advancing north

After talking about the issue of moving north, Comrade Chen Yi talked about the relocation of the military department. He believes that the anti-communist countercurrent will inevitably become more sinister with the development of the situation. Because our army's strength has gradually grown, and the war of resistance behind the enemy's back has become more intense, the Japanese army has gradually withdrawn its front-line troops to deal with the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army. The Kuomintang, determined by their anti-communist nature, is bound to provoke a war of friction. Didn't the "Pingjiang Incident" happen? This is a signal, and we need to be vigilant. The Kuomintang had opened its mouth wide with blood and wanted to swallow the New Fourth Army in one gulp. After the main force advances northward, the maoshan base area will be empty of troops, and the recalcitrant army will certainly take advantage of the void to separate the military headquarters from the forward troops, and the military headquarters can be eliminated at any time. If the military headquarters is moved to Maoshan, it will not only ensure security, but also consolidate the Maoshan base area. He said that he had repeatedly urged Comrade Xiang Ying to leave southern Anhui quickly and move the military headquarters to the Maoshan area. Comrade Mao Zedong and the Central Military Commission have also repeatedly sent orders urging the military department to move as soon as possible. However, Comrade Xiang Ying was addicted to the illusion of subjectivism, and they wanted to move the army headquarters to the Tianmu Mountain area when the enemy attacked the Zhejiang-Gansu line. It was also thought that the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party would not break down, and the military department could postpone the relocation. They are also worried that it will be difficult for the Water Network area of the Jiangnan Plain to persist in the struggle, and they are full of concerns and will not take action.
