02 Textbook interpretation

This text tells the story of Cao Chong's way of trying to call an elephant when he was a child. This story tells us that if we observe more and use our brains more when things happen, we can find a good way to solve the problem.

   There are 5 natural paragraphs in the whole text, which are narrated in the order in which things develop.

 The first natural passage tells that Cao Cao led his son and officials to see an elephant given to him. It explains the time of the story, the characters and the origin of the elephants.

 Paragraph 2 says that elephants are tall and large, and officials are talking about their weight.

   In the 3rd natural paragraph, the officials suggested to Cao Cao the method of weighing the elephant: first, to build a large scale to weigh; second, to cut the elephant into pieces of land and use the scale. Cao Cao shook his head as he listened. The 4th natural paragraph says that Cao Chong proposed the method of weighing the elephant. This passage is the focus of this lesson.

Cao Chong's method is divided into four steps:

(1) To get the elephant on board and draw a line at the sinking of the ship; (2) to drive the elephant off the ship, to load stones on the boat, and to the point of drawing the line;   

(3) weigh the stones on the ship; 

(4) Adding up the weight of the stone is the weight of the elephant.

   The 5th natural paragraph talks about the use of Cao Chong's method, and indeed weighs the elephant.

 This lesson has two illustrations that correspond to the text of the 4th and 5th natural paragraphs of the text, respectively.

The first painting shows Cao Chong talking about the method of weighing elephants, and Cao Cao and the officials smiled and listened;

The second painting shows an elephant standing on a boat, with an official drawing a line on the side of the ship to make marks, and Cao Cao, Cao Chong, and officials standing on the shore.

Textbook analysis

"Cao Chong Is an Elephant" is from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. WEI Shu. The Biography of King Chong of Deng Ai" tells the story of Cao Cao's son Cao Chong who used his brain to come up with a way to call an elephant when he was a child. Cao Chong is good at observation, loves to think with his brain, and can boldly express ideas. The whole text consists of 5 natural paragraphs, which are described in the order in which things develop. The first natural passage tells that Cao Cao took his son and officials to see an elephant sent by others, explaining the time of the story and the origin of the elephant. The second natural passage graphically depicts tall and large elephants, and officials are talking about the weight of the elephant, implying that it is difficult to know the weight of the elephant. In the third natural paragraph, some officials have come up with a way to build a large scale, but it does not work at all. The fourth natural paragraph tells that Cao Chong proposed the method of weighing the elephant, which is divided into 3 steps: driving the elephant to the boat and drawing a line at the sinking point of the hull; driving the elephant off the boat, loading the stone on the boat, and loading it until the ship sinks to the line; and calling the weight of the stone on the boat is the weight of the elephant.
