Professor Zhang Jun of CUHK: The main theme of the Chinese nation in the past hundred years is inseparable from the word "struggle"

Two examples of socialist literature and art

In contemporary literature, Liu Qing's "History of Entrepreneurship" highlights the characteristics of "for the people" and belongs to the representative works of socialist literature and art. The novel takes the agricultural cooperative movement set off at the beginning of the founding of New China as the background, and reflects the inevitable trend and complete process of the development of agricultural mutual assistance through the story of the peasants' arduous pioneering work represented by Liang Shengbao. At the artistic level, Zhang Jun believes that "the novel shows profound literary skills, and in many aspects such as detail grasp and psychological portrayal, it has reached the peak of contemporary works." ”

After the reform and opening up, although literature and art have shown a diversified development trend, the creation of "for the people" has always been an important force. Zhang Jun believes that in recent years, the popularity of outstanding film and television works such as "Great Rivers and Great Rivers" and "Mountains and Seas" means that socialist literature and art continue to play a leading role in the diversified literary and artistic pattern through the excellent works that continue to emerge.

Among them, the TV series "Mountains and Seas" is particularly representative. The play tells the story of the immigrants in Xihaigu since the 1990s, under the call of national policies and with the help of their counterparts in Fujian, they have continuously overcome difficulties, created value through labor, and built the "dry beach" with flying sand and stones into a "golden beach" with little land. Zhang Jun said: "'Mountains and Seas' is the "History of Entrepreneurship" in the new era, which not only truly reflects the theme of the era of poverty alleviation, but also makes this work have a certain artistic height by the original ecological presentation of regional customs, the capture of life details, the accurate portrayal of character psychology and the superb acting skills of the actors. ”

What are the characteristics of "for the people" literature and art

The TV series "Mountains and Seas" and the novel "History of Entrepreneurship" have appeared over a period of half a century, but the theme revolves around the arduous entrepreneurial experience of the Chinese nation. Zhang Jun believes that this theme profoundly embodies the three characteristics of socialist literature and art. He said: "The slogan of the Seventh Company of Steel in 'Soldier Assault' is impressive: Don't abandon! Don't give up! These two sentences can be used to summarize some of the spiritual cores of socialist literature and art. ”

"The 'struggle' advocated by socialist literature and art is to have a righteous heart, love labor, and unremitting self-improvement, and is a 'song of youth.'" Zhang Jun said that this spirit of not giving up is the spiritual portrayal of the Chinese nation for more than half a century. From experiencing humiliation to rising up for self-improvement to moving toward rejuvenation, the main theme of the Chinese nation in the past hundred years is inseparable from the word "struggle".

In addition, the third characteristic of socialist literature and art is that it can give people rich spiritual nutrition by showing the broad world and noble pursuits. Zhang Jun quoted Mao Jian, a professor at East China Normal University, as commenting on "Mountains and Seas": "Every scene and every character has removed the drama equation. "The play involves the beautiful emotions of Madford and Splash, Madbao and Mai Miao, but there is no entanglement and pulling. Zhang Jun said: "In addition to love, life can be richer, love can also be broader, and our life will have unlimited possibilities." ”
