Wu Haifeng's "Pink 1" _ Oilcasein Tempera _60x90cm_2024
In Wu Haifeng's creations, we can explore his understanding of the ancient painting material of Tempera and the classical painting of the early Renaissance, as well as traces of his long-term painting training. However, he is not imprisoned by the so-called "traditional" form of painting, and he is always breaking this "shackle" in terms of the subject matter and the content of expression, and always follows the guidance of his own heart to create his own working methods.

"Closer to people's daily lives"
Wu Haifeng, "Huaishan Yam"_Oilcasein Tempera_30x40cm_2024
As a carrier of emotion, art is inherently diverse and inclusive. It is not limited to a specific form or content, but is able to cross various boundaries and reach deep emotions in people's hearts. A "non-serious" theme does not mean a lack of depth or value, on the contrary, it may be more relevant to people's daily lives and more resonant. Embracing difference is the charm of art, and the theme of "non-seriousness" is the embodiment of this diversity and inclusion. It allows artists and audiences to explore and express emotions with a more open mind, allowing art to become a bridge between people.
"The link between the inner world and the real world"

The recent works can be seen as a series of creations, in which the picture unfolds in a specific space, which is like a translucent box, which allows the viewer to peek through a window into the most intimate and soft depths of people's hearts. These falls may involve complex emotions, deep thoughts, or hidden desires. The translucent box is not only a physical space, but also a spiritual space, a link between the painter and the viewer, between the inner world and the real world. In this process, the artwork is not only a platform for display, but also a medium.
"Calm and stable creation"

Wu Haifeng "Pink 3" _ Tempera _60x80cm_2024
I love Tempera as a painting material, it gives me a calm and stable state of mind. The material dries extremely quickly, and I am able to continuously superimpose brushstrokes and express my thoughts freely.

In addition, Tmalla's unique basal layer produces rich layers of texture that can be polished to create a fresco-like effect. These properties are irreplaceable by other materials, so in my current creations, Tempera remains my first choice.

However, art should also be diverse, and I am also willing to experiment with different materials and explore more possibilities in my future creations.
"Together, we build a picture"
Wu Haifeng, "To the East is the Sea" _ Oil Casein Tempera _40x50cm_2024
"To the East is the Sea" (detail)
In my paintings, the characters are placed in a specific field, just like the actors in a stage play play their own unique roles, weaving a story together. They are not only the protagonists of the story, but also an integral part of the overall picture frame. Each character and element does not exist in isolation, but is interdependent and mutually influencing, and together they build a picture.
"Fragmented information in real life"
Wu Haifeng, "City of Entertainment" _ Tempera _360x270cm_2022
The work "City of Entertainment" was inspired by the book "Entertainment to Death". This book provides an in-depth analysis of the dramatic changes that have taken place in the characteristics of public discourse in society during the transition from the rule of print to the rule of television. In the era of print domination, public discourse was characterized by rationality, order, and logic, but in the era of television domination, this characteristic gradually shifted to detachment, superficiality, and fragmentation.
All public discourse is presented in the form of entertainment, which is a social phenomenon that deserves our vigilance. In "City of Entertainment", I tried to present the impact of this fragmented information through splicing, unrelated elements. Every detail, every detail in this city, is a symbol of fragmented information in real life. They may seem unrelated, but they are closely connected, and together they form this "city of entertainment".
"Simple image and expression"
Wu Haifeng's "Assault Rat" _ Gold leaf, Tempera _30x40cm_2023
The expressions I depict tend to be monolithic, numb, and partially occluded, influenced by my undergraduate and graduate studies with Western Renaissance painters such as Francesca and Fra Angelico. These painters tend to depict characters with a universal character and a less distinct personality, providing the viewer with a wide range of imagination through concise images and expressions.
Wu Haifeng, "W" _ Oil Casein Tempera _30x30cm_2023
I use this technique to guide the viewer to think and feel the work more deeply, and at the same time to provide the viewer with a more personal imagination space that reflects personal emotions and aesthetic views. This style is not only a tribute to Renaissance painting, but also a personal exploration and attempt to portray characters.
"Expressing and disseminating a unique understanding and feeling of the world"
Wu Haifeng's "Dancing Cat in West Lake" _ Tempera, metal foil _40x40cm_2023
Wu Haifeng's creative process
I believe that artists should play the role of the Creator and explore, express and disseminate their unique understanding and feelings of the world through artistic creation. In my artistic practice, I follow the inner guidance and strive to create a unique world of my own, sharing what I see and feel and what I think with the audience.
