Nie Zhiqi wrote an article entitled "The "People's Imagination of Populism: Justification and Reflection" in the first issue of Open Times in 2024, pointing out that the danger of populism lies in the contention and even falsification of the people's discourse on which democracy is based. Therefore, if we want to truly respond to the challenge of populism, the first thing to clarify is the real difference between democracy and populism in terms of people's views. Therefore, this paper reviews and analyzes the existing understanding of the populist view of the people from the perspectives of "anti-establishment", "anti-elite" and "anti-pluralism", and argues that although these labeled assertions have their truth, their ambiguity, tension and even limitations still need to be further clarified. On this basis, this paper points out that "anti-pluralism" is indeed the essential feature of the populist view of the people, but the "anti-pluralism" here cannot simply be equated with the appeal to the people as a whole. In other words, the essential difference between populism and democracy in the view of the people is not whether they reject the people as a whole, but whether they imagine them differently, that is, whether they recognize the people as a whole and have a fictional meaning. The discussion in this paper not only helps to deepen the understanding of populism, but also provides a reference for rethinking the theory of democracy.
