On May 11, 2024, on the occasion of the 2nd Yangtze River Chronic Disease Digital Management Forum, the formulation of the "Expert Consensus on Multidisciplinary Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Metabolism-related Fatty Liver Disease in China" was officially launched. Teng Gaojun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University, and Tong Xiaolin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the National Center for Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, delivered speeches.

Wu Jing, Director of the Center for Chronic Diseases of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was invited to attend. She pointed out that chronic diseases are the biggest global health threat in the 21st century, and the four major chronic diseases account for 81.2% of all deaths from noncommunicable diseases. Therefore, comprehensive management of chronic diseases must be strengthened: prevention first, planning and guidance, action implementation, indicator quantification, and shifting from "treatment-centered" to "health-centered".

Nowadays, chronic diseases have become a major public health problem that seriously affects the health of the people on the mainland. The meeting invited Zhang Wenhong, Director of the National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases, Li Xi, Executive Deputy Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Gao Xin from Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, and Zhan Siyan, Dean of the School of Public Health of Peking University, to exchange and share their views on the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and the construction of population cohorts.

Metabolic-related fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus are two chronic metabolic diseases in mainland China, and the two diseases often coexist, which are not only closely related in terms of pathogenesis, screening and diagnosis, and treatment targets, but also jointly promote the risk of intrahepatic and extrahepatic adverse outcomes. Therefore, the multidisciplinary joint management of the two diseases is conducive to the rational allocation of medical resources in the mainland.

This consensus focuses on the multidisciplinary management of type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with metabolic-related fatty liver disease, and the members of the expert group include eight disciplines: liver disease, endocrinology, cardiovascular, nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, bariatric and metabolic surgery, public health, and hospital management. Li Jie, Secretary-General of the Consensus Expert Group and Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University School of Medicine, introduced in detail the preparatory work and the important contents to be included. Subsequently, Zhao Linhua and other experts from Guang'anmen Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on the formulation of consensus.

Qi Xiaolong, the leader of the consensus expert group, a national high-level talent, and the founder of CHESS, summarized the kick-off meeting, emphasizing the important value of the consensus for the whole management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic-related fatty liver disease, and put forward specific requirements for the follow-up formulation of the consensus.
