Meet a better version of yourself through reading

——Hu Panzhi, principal of Wuhan Huangpi District Experimental Primary School

What kind of school is it? This is a question I have been thinking about since I became the principal of Huangpi District Experimental Primary School in Wuhan.

One afternoon, the children were chasing and playing around the schoolyard. By the flower bed on the first floor, I saw a student quietly reading a book, immersed in it. When I walked over and asked, it turned out that she was a second-year student, and she bought a comic book on the weekend, and she was looking at it, so she brought it to school and read it with relish.

Looking at the child in front of me who is focused on reading, I suddenly became enlightened, holding my favorite book and reading intently in the beautiful campus, isn't this what a child should be? The most important thing is that the fragrance of books can go far, and running a campus full of books is not a new way for us to govern the school?

The best education is reading

Education needs to be innovative and upright. Reading is the foundation of education and one of the right ways for education to be adhered to. Primary education lays the foundation for children's future, which is to give children the interest in learning, the atmosphere of joy to learn, the ability to learn, and the habit of being good at learning. It is what we can and should do to make students love reading, fall in love with reading, and develop the habit of reading.

When a teenager is studying, his hand is the most beautiful picture. In primary school, students are energetic, have a strong memory, and read more good books, which is to reserve a wealth for their future life. More importantly, developing a good habit of loving and reading in primary school will benefit you for a lifetime.

As a Chinese teacher, I know the importance of reading. Especially in the information age, mobile phones, computers and other network media make reading fragmented, in the increasingly impetuous and hurried fast-paced life, "reading can keep people alive and thoughtful, let people get wisdom and inspiration, and let people nourish Haoran righteousness." "By nourishing children's hearts with reading and nourishing their souls with books, students can be tranquil, wise, wise, courageous, and happy in an intelligent future. The school regards reading as an important measure to implement the "double reduction", and develops reading into a school-based curriculum for after-school services, so that students can grow happily in reading.

There is the fragrance of books, and it is more beautiful. In the Meiya Campus of the Experimental Primary School, we use the fragrance of the Maimai books to fill the Meiya Campus, so that the children's beautiful childhood time is reflected in the poetry books, and the happy, fulfilling and interesting minds are moistened in reading.

The most lingering is the book gallery

The school management team reached a consensus to start the campus reading project and build a scholarly campus.

There are books to read, so that students can see the books. The school opened the library, integrated the function of the campus corridor, created a book corridor on the campus wind and rain corridor, and moved 3,200 carefully selected books from the library to the playground, so that children can read at any time after school. The school has an e-bookcase for book borrowing, and students can borrow and return it at any time by brushing their faces. There is a book corner in the class, where students can exchange books and borrow and read at any time.

When I started to put the books in the hallway, some teachers were worried about whether the books would be taken away. After a semester, when the administrator took the students to count the books, they were pleasantly surprised to find that the books on the shelves and the books in the borrowing records were exactly 3,200 books, which was a lot.

There are books to read, and the teacher guides the students to read. The school regards the reading of teachers and students as a project for students' intellectual and moral development and teachers' professional development, and works tirelessly. In 2023, the school will continue to carry out a series of whole-book reading activities, insisting on reading in the morning and afternoon every day, reading exchange classes every month, and learning festivals every year. Every semester, the department lists the list of books to be read by teachers and the recommended list of books to be read by students, compiles school-based readings of "Classic Recitation" for students, and produces and distributes exquisite reading records and "Reading Growth" record books. Recommend a co-reading list every month, and carry out "class reading together" activities. The teacher instructs the students to read, explains the reading annotation symbols, learns to extract beautiful words and sentences, and writes about the reading experience. Teachers in the lower grades even demonstrated reading, teachers and students read the same book, and encouraged parents to read with their children.

Reading is demonstrative, reading is motivating. The school added class reading display at the flag-raising ceremony on Monday, held teacher reading clubs, student story meetings, reading knowledge competitions, campus reading festivals and other activities, reading has become a fashion, and children who read books have been praised and rewarded.

Walking into the experimental primary school, the campus is full of books, and the atmosphere of reading has become a common practice on the campus. Students linger in the scholarly corridor, which becomes one of the most beautiful scenery on campus. The sound of Langlang reading has become the strongest voice on the Meiya campus, and the faint fragrance of books fills every corner of the campus. In 2023, the school won awards such as "Wuhan Clean School Demonstration School", "Huangpi District Reading Improvement Project Excellence Award", "Huangpi District Outstanding Moral Education Achievement Award", "Huangpi District Advanced School for Education and Teaching Performance Management" and other awards.

Reading opens up a starry sky

For two years, we have been deeply involved in the reading project, and we have quietly felt the gratifying changes.

Teachers actively read, enrich themselves, improve themselves, find good ways to teach in professional books, innovate classroom teaching strategies, improve the quality of classroom teaching, some teachers in the books to understand the teaching ideas, reflect on teaching practice, write a flesh-and-blood teaching papers, teaching cases, and won awards in competitions at all levels in the urban area.

Teachers who love to read have driven scholarly classes and opened a window for students' development. At the flag-raising ceremony every Monday and the reading activities every semester, the students' speeches were round, vivid and exciting, sonorous and generous, and became the confident, sunny, elegant and well-read appearance of the Meiya teenagers I expected.

There is a classmate in the third grade who usually has nothing to do between classes and likes to play with his peers. In March 2023, when he was running wildly in the book corridor, he bumped into a book, and I happened to meet him. I asked him to pick it up and read it, and he was immediately drawn to the plot of the book. When the class bell rang, the child said that he wanted to take it back to the classroom, and I happily agreed, reminding him to register it in the notebook, and the child happily took the book away. Later, I heard that he not only finished reading, but also shared his thoughts on reading with his classmates in the class reading club. Slowly, this child fell in love with reading, and often lingered in the book corridor between classes, and every time he met me, he would greet me politely: "Hello Principal Hu, I'm here to read a book!" ”

Chinese teacher Li Shiqi likes to read, and Pei Yicheng, a student in Class 6 (10), is also deeply affected. He is the leader of the class, and he takes his classmates to read the classics every day. He loves to read, and is the student who borrows the most books every semester, and he likes to excerpt and neatly write good words and sentences in the reading record book, and also write his own experience. Because of his love of reading, he walked on the final stage of Wuhan's classic recitation and won the 2023 Wuhan "Good Boy of the New Era".

The changes brought about by reading are felt most by Chinese teachers. The teachers said that since the launch of the "Reading Project", the children's essays have been written and substantial, and the expressions are clear and reasonable. In recent years, many students of our school have returned with honors in the "Chucai" writing contest and classic recitation competition.

I often meet students on campus, I like to approach them, lean down and ask them about their reading content, listen carefully to their reading impressions, and I will also share my reading experience with them. In the vivid narration of the students, in their happy and hearty laughter, and in their incomparably bright and clear eyes, I seem to see strange and wonderful dreams and wonderful futures...... Children who love to read will have a bright future.

Many students also like to read when they go home, and always pull their parents to share their reading stories and encourage them to read together. Parents wrote to me in the "Principal's Mailbox" that their children now prefer to read.

Reading is a slow process, and some children have already made their mark through reading, while many more are in the middle of reading. As a principal, I would like to support a penny for students in the boundless ocean of knowledge, go deeper into the joy of reading, and take them to meet the more beautiful scenery of life.
