Nintendo remains committed to physical game sales

Nintendo confirmed that it is committed to continuing to sell physical copies of its games for the foreseeable future. Despite the increasing digitalization of the video game industry, Nintendo has maintained support for physical games throughout the life of its beloved Switch. Now, with the next generation of the Switch expected to launch around next year, one of the company's executives has reiterated its position.

Ever since details of the ongoing development of the Switch 2 were leaked, fans have been desperately searching on official forums and social media in hopes of finding more details about Nintendo's next-generation console. Such as the quality of the Switch 2's hardware upgrades, backward compatibility with previous generation games, and whether the console will still support physical media or will focus on its increasingly popular digitization.

Some of the company's investors have also voiced these issues and expressed them directly to President Shuntaro Furukawa in Nintendo's latest earnings Q&A. While Furukawa specifically acknowledged the tremendous growth in its digital business compared to the state it was at the beginning of the Switch's life cycle, the president claimed that the company intends to maximize sales across all storefronts, including digital and physical sales. Furukawa further stated that Nintendo has no intention of departing from this policy at this time, and the company intends to support and improve both physical and digital distribution systems for the foreseeable future.

That being said, Furukawa also revealed that he is aware of the growing trend of digitalization in the video game industry and confirmed that even Nintendo is no exception. He believes that as online stores and content become more convenient and useful for developers and consumers, more users will gravitate towards digital media, and expects the shift in the market to be evident in the years following the release of the next generation of the Switch.

Furukawa also confirmed that the company will continue to invest in the Nintendo account system on the Switch 2. Although Furukawa did not specify how much the company's support will be, he confirmed that Nintendo's goal is to build long-term relationships with customers through an account system that spans generations of hardware, including the highly anticipated successor to the Switch.
