It is reported that the electric bicycle shed where the fire broke out is located in the middle of two 32-storey residential buildings on No. 8 and No. 7. The overheated carport was fenced and cordoned, and more than a dozen e-bikes were burned, and many were burned to the frame.

How did the fire start?

In the early morning of May 3, a resident of Xinkangyuan Community who got up early for morning exercise noticed smoke coming from the electric bicycle shed near Building 8, and the resident immediately called 119 to call the police.

Almost at the same time, a security guard on duty at the No. 1 guard box of the residential property saw the smoke rising, and he ran towards the fire point while notifying the central control room of the property and the captain of the security team. "When I arrived, the fire was very fierce, so we put out the fire with a nearby fire extinguisher."

"After the fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene, they immediately organized a firefight, and put the overheated electric bicycle battery into a large plastic bucket filled with water to cool and soak, and after 3 minutes, the fire was extinguished at the scene, and there were no casualties." Tang Wanlin, chief of the news and publicity section of the Changping District Fire and Rescue Detachment, said that after on-site investigation, video surveillance and interviews by fire investigators, it was preliminarily determined that the battery failure of an electric bicycle during charging caused the fire. At present, the remains of batteries and electrical lines have been extracted and sent for inspection.

Dong Bo, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Neighborhood Committee of Xinkangyuan Community, introduced that the number of electric bicycles in Xinkangyuan Community is more than 580, with a total of 14 charging facilities and more than 260 charging interfaces, which can basically meet the charging needs of residents. "The residential buildings on both sides of the charging carport on fire are 32 storeys high, with 306 residents each, so the utilization rate of this carport is still quite high, and fortunately, the car that caught fire this time is charging outdoors, if the fire occurs in the high-rise residential buildings on the side, the consequences are unimaginable."

Dong Bo said that after the fire, many residents discussed that they must not take chances and take electric bicycles or batteries home to charge. "We also hope that residents can supervise each other, and if we find that some residents have illegally brought their vehicles or batteries into the building, if the reminder does not work, we can inform the property and the neighborhood committee, and we will persuade them."

According to statistics, from January to April this year, a total of 137 electric bicycle fires occurred in Beijing, none of which caused casualties, an important reason is that most of these fires occurred outdoors, and only 2 occurred indoors.
