At present, the conflict in the Middle East is at its most serious level in decades. As the confrontation between Israel and Palestine continues to escalate, the situation has reached the brink of becoming uncontrollable. Let's focus on this growing humanitarian crisis:
Gaza has been devastated and civilian lives have been devastated
Israel's military assault on the Gaza Strip has been going on for almost a year. In the course of this long war, Gaza's civilian infrastructure has been subjected to unprecedented destruction. Lifeline systems such as electricity, water and health care have been disrupted one after another, leaving a large number of civilians homeless.
According to the United Nations, nearly 2 million Gaza residents, including hundreds of thousands of children, live in extreme poverty and inhospitable conditions. The fighting continues to cause trauma and death to civilians in the area, and many families, relatives and friends have been decreant.
Humanitarian relief efforts have been hampered, and the situation is becoming more and more dire
In the face of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, multiple United Nations agencies have been on the front lines of assistance. However, their actions have been severely obstructed and attacked by Israel.
Not only have Israeli forces repeatedly attacked the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Near East (UNRWA) bases in Gaza, but even the headquarters in Jerusalem has been set on fire by extremists. What's more, Israel has brutally blocked the passage of UNRWA personnel and supplies into Gaza.
At present, UNRWA's supplies and fuel reserves in Gaza will last only one week. If the situation is not eased, Gaza will face the crisis of a complete disruption of humanitarian assistance.
Violence escalated repeatedly, and peace talks broke down
Although the current round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict stemmed from a small friction in October last year, the violent contest between the two sides quickly expanded into a full-scale war. In just a few months, Gaza has been subjected to thousands of Israeli airstrikes, and civilian casualties have been mounting.
Palestinian militants have repeatedly fired rockets at Israeli towns, causing casualties and panic among some people. Neither side had any intention of budging, and the violence fell into a vicious circle.
On 9 May, ceasefire talks in Cairo, Egypt's capital, broke down again. The Israeli delegation took a hard line and did not deny the Israeli ground attack on Rafah, but openly clamored that it would continue the military operation as planned.
The United States suspended military aid, and Israel was arrogant
Shockingly, the Israeli government has shown unprecedented arrogance and stubbornness in the face of military sanctions from its traditional ally, the United States.
Netanyahu not only openly clamored that "we will continue to fight even without military assistance", but the Israeli military spokesman even ignored the facts, claiming that he has sufficient weapons to carry out all military operations.
As everyone knows, the Israeli army's combat capability depends to a large extent on US arms support. The suspension of the supply of high-load ammunition is bound to seriously weaken the combat effectiveness of the Israeli army. But Netanyahu is clearly obsessed with endless wars.
Humanitarian assistance cannot be interfered with, and violence must stop at wisdom
In the face of the continued deterioration of the crisis in the Middle East, we should clearly express the mainstream consensus of the international community that any act of violence against civilians and humanitarian workers is a serious crime of international law and should be firmly condemned by the international community.
Humanitarian access must be unimpeded and the lives of civilians must be safeguarded. The personnel and facilities of the parties concerned should also be fully respected in accordance with international law. Only by putting an end to all acts of violence and through dialogue and negotiation can a way out of the Middle East problem be found.
Seeing such a devastating humanitarian catastrophe is equally traumatic to our hearts. Here, we call on the international community to exert further pressure to force Israel and Palestine to cease fire and hostilities and immediately restart the peace process. Let reason and wisdom triumph over hatred and barbarism, and only in this way can peace be restored in the Middle East!
