Gansu is the province with the most artificial alfalfa cultivation in the country, and the alfalfa grass all over the mountains has not only improved the local ecological environment, but also brought huge economic benefits to the masses. However, more than 30 years ago, the cultivation of forage grass and the processing of grass powder in Gansu were still limited to books and seminars, and sporadic planting was limited to experimental fields······ The huge change is because Gansu has its own cultivation of alfalfa that is most suitable for local growth, with seeds, and technology, so that it has today's "most in the country". Cao Zhizhong, a professor at Gansu Agricultural University, is the "first person to produce alfalfa seeds in China" with his team to make these research results.

"There are many places in Gansu that are arid and semi-arid mountainous areas, and there are large areas of desert Gobi. But it's a great place to grow grass. Especially for alfalfa grass, the income per mu of growing alfalfa is 100 to 200 yuan higher than that of growing wheat······ Although he is nearly 80 years old, Cao Zhizhong, who has worked with grass all his life, is still very excited when he talks about "grass".
In 1968, 23-year-old Cao Zhizhong graduated from Gansu Agricultural University with a major in animal husbandry and stayed on to teach, and since then, his life has been closely bound to the word "alfalfa". After his work, he devoted himself to grass seed research, especially alfalfa research, without stopping.
Cao Zhizhong combined teaching, scientific research and extension, moved the classroom to the field, and focused on forage germplasm resources, forage cultivation and breeding, forage processing and utilization, and grass industry. In addition to teaching, Cao Zhizhong's life is to do research around pastures.
The work finally yielded results: he presided over the breeding of new varieties such as "Gannong No. 1", "No. 2 Mixed Alfalfa" and "Gannong No. 3 Alfalfa", which have excellent cold tolerance, and presided over or participated in the research and collation of a total of 20 varieties of various forage grasses and turfgrasses that were declared for registration······ The students who followed him to do the experiments all saw an "authoritative and gentle" old man, who did not care about his age, only rolled up his sleeves and was obsessed with research, so that many students realized the meaning of the words "serving the country through scientific research".

In 2010, Cao Zhizhong, who had been working in the teaching arena for more than 40 years, retired, but he did not stop his research because he had a special affection for pasture. In his mind, the grass that grows in the mountains, rivers and ravines, the grasslands, the Gobi and the fields is alive, because these green elves contain his deep affection to make the land of Longyuan green as soon as possible and the farmers here to become rich as soon as possible.
Measuring the land of Longyuan with his footsteps and putting forward a feasible plan, Cao Zhizhong still leaned over the field to continue the research and breeding and promotion of alfalfa seeds. In Longmen Township, Lingtai County, the 1,500-acre experimental base provides new models and technologies for the management of the Loess Plateau and the enrichment of farmers by planting grass and raising livestock. In Xiaohaizi Village, Nanhua Town, Gaotai County, local farmers always see an old man with gray hair going to the field: "Why are you doing experiments in the field again?" "He's not tired? Why is he so old and so tormented?"
For more than ten years, Cao Zhizhong has been active in the fields of Xiaohaizi Village, after years of tireless efforts. At present, the "Gannong No. 12 Alfalfa" cultivated by Cao Zhizhong has been approved and put into production, and another 7 new alfalfa varieties are also being tested and submitted for review. Taking the opportunity of putting new products into production, the Pratacultural College of Gansu Agricultural University also cooperated with professional cooperatives to successfully practice the seed production model of "breeders + enterprises + cooperatives and farmers", and comprehensively promoted the alfalfa seed production industry in Gaotai County.
At that time, the farmers who admired Cao Zhizhong's spiritual head really tasted the sweetness - in just a dozen years, Xiaohaizi Village has become "China's No. 1 Alfalfa Seed Production Village", and its production of high-quality alfalfa seeds accounts for 10% of the country's total. All this is due to the persistence of Cao Zhizhong and the team. In June last year, Gansu Agricultural University established a teaching and research base for forage breeding, multiplication and promotion in Xiaohaizi Village. In March this year, the school established the "Forage Seed Industry Expert Institute" in Xiaohaizi Village.
With the expansion of the forage planting area and the grass industry being recognized and accepted by more and more people, a new problem is placed in front of Professor Cao Zhizhong: in many places, due to the lack of leading forage processing enterprises, the masses see that the forage grass they grow cannot be purchased and processed in time and rots in the ground, which is economically damaged and also dampens the enthusiasm of grass planting.
Cao Zhizhong was anxious in his eyes, and he ran around, calling on more enterprises and individuals to invest capital and technology in the establishment of grass product processing enterprises. In order to build a bridge between the forage planting base and the processing enterprise, he took the calculated "grass economy" benefit account to explain to the villagers and entrepreneurs. The bill not only compares the benefits of growing grain and grass, but also refers to the market price of grass products at home and abroad······
At the foot of Guanshan Mountain, the Hexi Corridor, and the Qinwangchuan River, Cao Zhizhong's pace of spreading scientific and technological knowledge of the grass industry has never stopped.
